Summary by Sourcery

Adopt a canonical noun–verb CLI grammar and consolidate lifecycle list commands behind typed, discoverable contracts while preserving backward-compatible aliases.

New Features:

  • Publish machine-readable noun–verb grammar, command-destination, and typed alias contracts across the CLI, SDK, MCP, completions, and runtime contract surfaces.
  • Consolidate lifecycle listing under pm list with status filters and --all, while retaining deprecated list-* commands as executable hidden aliases with migration hints.

Bug Fixes:

  • Remove the ambiguous pm list --all failure and align list behavior and schemas across CLI, SDK, MCP, completions, and documentation.

Enhancements:

  • Add a fail-closed grammar and MCP parity gate covering destination census completeness, alias targets, discoverable actions, and visible command-surface growth.
  • Add configurable deprecation hints through the ux.deprecation_hints setting and expose canonical versus deprecated action inventories.
  • Update user guidance, generated contract projections, token-surface baselines, and compatibility coverage for the canonical command model.

Build:

  • Add the command grammar gate to static quality checks and provide a dedicated command-grammar quality script.

Documentation:

  • Document the accepted noun–verb grammar, destination census, compatibility policy, and list-command migration guidance.
  • Update command usage examples and agent onboarding documentation to use canonical list filters.

Tests:

  • Add unit and integration coverage for grammar validation, alias compatibility, list routing, hidden discovery, MCP parity, settings, completions, and packaged CLI behavior.

Chores:

  • Refresh generated contracts, baselines, governance records, and changelog metadata for the new grammar and alias policy.

Summary by cubic

Publishes the canonical noun–verb CLI grammar and typed alias contracts, consolidates list variants behind --status/--all, and removes the pm list --all ambiguity. Previously list-open/in-progress/... were top-level; now pm list defaults to active items, --status selects lifecycle classes, --all includes every status, and legacy list-* spellings run as hidden typed aliases with a one-line migration hint.

  • Enforces grammar conformance via src/sdk/cli-contracts/grammar-contracts.ts and scripts/release/command-grammar-gate.mjs; excludes hidden aliases from visible accounting; distinguishes core vs. conditional destinations; requires keep-as-is reasons; fails on noun/verb drift and missing alias targets; also fails when core token baselines disappear and bounds grammar discovery subprocess resources.
  • Publishes PM_COMMAND_ALIAS_CONTRACTS, resolvePmCommandAlias, and renderPmCommandAliasMigrationHint; hides deprecated aliases from help, completions (Zsh/Fish parity), contracts, and MCP discovery; exposes PM_DISCOVERABLE_TOOL_ACTIONS and PM_DEPRECATED_TOOL_ACTIONS; preserves contracts when a deprecated action is explicitly requested; enforces MCP action and narrow-tool parity.
  • Canonicalizes list filters: adds --status and --all; removes the ambiguous_list_all error and code; fixed-status compatibility actions and schemas omit lifecycle selectors; updates tool schemas, completions, docs, and tests.
  • Adds optional ux.deprecation_hints (default true) to control the once-per-invocation alias hint and preserves SDK source compatibility when unset.
  • Documents the accepted grammar and destination census in docs/CLI_GRAMMAR.md.

Migration

  • Replace list-* commands with pm list --status <open|in_progress|blocked|closed|canceled|draft>; use pm list --all for all statuses.
  • Suppress alias migration hints: pm config set ux.deprecation_hints=false.
  • MCP clients should enumerate actions from PM_DISCOVERABLE_TOOL_ACTIONS; deprecated actions remain executable but are not advertised.

Written for commit 11e4e7d. Summary will update on new commits.

Review in cubic

Define the exhaustive command-destination census and enforce noun-verb conformance through mandatory static and release gates.

Consolidate lifecycle list variants behind canonical status filters while preserving hidden, typed compatibility aliases with configurable migration hints across CLI, SDK, MCP, completions, and docs.

Tighten agent token baselines, generated contracts, test coverage, PM outcomes, dependency dispositions, and GitHub/Sentry governance evidence.

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits for each organization. Most developers receive the normal plan review availability.

For paid Pro and Pro+ PR reviews, CodeRabbit uses adaptive limits for sustained high-volume activity. When a developer's recent PR review activity reaches the 95th percentile or higher among CodeRabbit users, additional reviews become available more gradually as earlier reviews age out of the rolling window.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 61e39

This change consolidates lifecycle commands and republishes CLI contracts, but the current head can omit command details for explicitly selected legacy actions and can allow new core commands to bypass baseline validation; several completion, documentation, test-isolation, census, and governance mismatches also remain. Fix or explicitly accept these issues before merging.

Reviewer's Guide

Introduces a canonical, machine-readable CLI grammar and alias contract layer, consolidates the list* status commands behind a single list + flags interface while keeping deprecated aliases hidden but executable with configurable migration hints, wires these contracts through CLI registration, SDK, MCP tools, completions, configuration, and docs, and adds a CI command-grammar gate plus tests and settings to enforce and tune the behavior.

File-Level Changes

Change Details Files
Add a structured command-alias contract table and expose helpers through the SDK and bootstrap layer.
  • Replace the flat EXECUTABLE_COMMAND_ALIASES record with a PM_COMMAND_ALIAS_CONTRACTS array containing lifecycle, visibility, registration, canonical argv, and owner metadata.
  • Derive EXECUTABLE_COMMAND_ALIASES from PM_COMMAND_ALIAS_CONTRACTS filtered to bootstrap-registered aliases.
  • Add resolvePmCommandAlias and renderPmCommandAliasMigrationHint helpers and re-export types and functions from cli-bootstrap, cli-contracts, and the SDK index.

Consolidate list* status commands behind canonical list + --status/--all semantics while preserving deprecated typed aliases with configurable migration hints.
  • Introduce CANONICAL_LIST_STATUS_VARIANTS mapping and refactor runRegisteredListCommand to route list invocations with --status or --all to the appropriate list-* behavior while keeping list default to active items only.
  • Extend list command registration to accept an aliasContract, hide deprecated list-* commands from commander help, add a canonical --all flag on list, and update help description text.
  • Emit one-line deprecation hints for deprecated commander aliases based on settings.ux.deprecation_hints and ensure behavior is covered by new unit tests and updated integration tests.
  • Update workspace snapshot, scripting, and CLI integration tests to expect new list semantics (active-only default, explicit --all for all statuses) and JSON filter shapes.
  • Refresh documentation and guidance (COMMANDS, AGENT_GUIDE, ONBOARDING, QUICKSTART, README, AGENTS, error guidance, guide topics) to use pm list --status/--all examples instead of list-* commands.

Add a formal CLI grammar and command-destination census with a CI gate and runtime contracts exposure.
  • Introduce grammar-contracts.ts defining PM_CLI_GRAMMAR_NOUNS, shared verbs, PM_COMMAND_DESTINATION_CONTRACTS (exhaustive command→noun/target mapping), and verifyPmCliGrammar that reports conformance findings and top-level command ceiling violations.
  • Wire grammar_contracts into ContractsResult: include grammar metadata in summary and attach the full destination census when --full is requested; ensure buildCommandAliasSurface now groups canonical commands with alias contracts.
  • Add a command-grammar-gate.mjs release script that runs pm contracts --summary --json, feeds commands into verifyPmCliGrammar with PM_COMMAND_ALIAS_CONTRACTS, prints the report, and fails CI when report.ok is false.
  • Create unit tests for grammar contracts and the gate, and adjust contracts snapshot tests to account for command_aliases contracts and hidden alias handling.
  • Update package.json quality:static script and releaseContracts EXPECTED_QUALITY_STATIC_SCRIPT to include the new command-grammar gate.

Align tool/action enumeration, MCP tool schemas, completions, and contracts with the new alias lifecycle and visibility policy.
  • Derive PM_DEPRECATED_TOOL_ACTIONS from PM_COMMAND_ALIAS_CONTRACTS and PM_TOOL_ACTIONS, and expose PM_DISCOVERABLE_TOOL_ACTIONS for MCP-facing discovery; filter deprecated tool actions from unscoped contracts results.
  • Adjust mcp-handshake tests and tool-definitions.ts so pm_run action enums and descriptions are based on PM_DISCOVERABLE_TOOL_ACTIONS and explicitly exclude deprecated actions while keeping package-owned actions prose.
  • Filter hidden, deprecated alias commands from contracts output (resolveOutputCommands) and from CLI completion command lists; update Zsh/Fish completion definitions to add canonical --status/--all flags and drop legacy --all alias semantics.
  • Add runtime-alias-surface tests to ensure contracts omit alias declarations whose canonical or commander alias is missing.

Extend configuration and settings to control UX deprecation hints and keep settings/alias search in sync.
  • Add ux.deprecation_hints boolean to PmSettings, SETTINGS_DEFAULTS, ParsedSettings, mergeSettings, serialization ordering, and settings validator, with corresponding nested setting descriptor ux_deprecation_hints and config alias.
  • Update nested-settings and settings-store tests to cover the new UX section and deprecation-hints parsing and ordering, and add a validator test for the optional UX preference.
  • Ensure config-key-aliases-search expectations include ux_deprecation_hints and adjust expected alias count.

Update docs and change tracking to describe the grammar, alias shim layer, and consolidation work.
  • Add CLI_GRAMMAR.md documenting the noun–verb grammar, consolidation principles, alias compatibility policy, SDK contracts, enforcement, and consequences, and link it from docs/README.md.
  • Extend CHANGELOG.md with Added/Deprecated/Other entries describing the alias shim layer, grammar ADR, list consolidation, and command-grammar gate work, with PM item references.
  • Refresh PM agent/decision/task history and baselines for token surface, error codes, gate registry, surface replication, and SDK public surface JSON snapshots to reflect the new APIs and scripts.

the live command contracts so contracts --summary includes all supported
commands, including the listed vcs, beads import, completion, and guide
commands. Register missing commands in the runtime contracts, or remove/replace
census rows for unsupported commands, ensuring the grammar gate and
quality:static pass.

In `@src/sdk/cli-contracts/tool-schema.ts`:
- Line 302: Remove the all action from the legacy list-* contract definitions in
the tool schema so those aliases only expose their fixed-status actions. Keep

legacy list handlers to accept and ignore it.

In `@src/sdk/completion.ts`:
- Around line 1025-1028: Restrict completion flags to the commands that support
them: update the Zsh and Bash list completion branches so --all is offered only
for list and --status only for commands with allowStatusFilter enabled,
excluding aliases such as list-open and list-draft. Add assertions covering
legacy aliases and verifying they do not complete unsupported flags.

In `@tests/unit/sdk/cli-contracts/runtime-alias-surface.spec.ts`:
- Around line 9-14: Isolate the runtime-alias contract test from repository and
process-global state: provide sandboxed PM_PATH and PM_GLOBAL_PATH via
GLOBAL_OPTIONS, and avoid mutating PM_COMMAND_ALIAS_CONTRACTS during the
asynchronous runContracts call by using a test-local injection seam or isolated
module state. Ensure the test never accesses the real .agents/pm data or exposes
injected aliases to other tests.

Distinguish always-present core commands from conditional package destinations so the grammar census passes in clean CI without weakening undeclared-command rejection.

Enforce MCP action and narrow-tool parity, remove ignored lifecycle selectors from fixed list schemas, keep hidden aliases out of completions, and isolate alias tests from real tracker state.

Record the review corrections, clean-room acceptance, exact coverage, and release evidence on pm-wt43zj and pm-pfqi.

Exclude hidden aliases from visible grammar accounting, require reasons for keep-as-is destinations, and inject census fixtures without mutating exported state.

Restore test process isolation and preserve source compatibility for SDK consumers that construct settings without the new optional UX preference.

Align public command guidance and the generated changelog with the accepted grammar ADR, with exact coverage and PM closeout evidence.

Fail closed when core token baselines disappear and bound grammar discovery subprocess resources. Preserve explicitly selected compatibility action contracts, complete Zsh and Fish flag parity, and clarify lifecycle versus output-bound list flags.

Add negative controls and exact assertions for every late review finding, repair alias dependency chronology through pm, and close the three delivered grammar and list-consolidation items with full test and clean-room evidence.

Final late-review fixes are pushed at 11e4e7d: all eight inline findings have targeted regression coverage, clean-room acceptance passed, static quality is green, and exact coverage is 100/100/100/100 across 7,527 tests. @greptileai review this exact head. @coderabbitai full review
