Closing without merging — this PR is a stale artifact, not a real proposal.

It was opened at 07:50:39 by the release-please run at 07:48:46. At that moment main was already at chore(release): v0.26.1 with .release-please-manifest.json at 0.26.1, but the v0.26.1 tag did not exist yet — that run is the one whose Detect release drift step failed because release-please merged the release PR without creating the release. Seeing a manifest ahead of every existing tag, release-please lost its place and re-derived a version from the whole history, arriving at 0.19.0.

Merging this would have downgraded .release-please-manifest.json from 0.26.1 to 0.19.0 and rewritten CHANGELOG.md from scratch.

v0.26.1 was published manually at 07:51:38 (59s after this PR was opened) and #347 is labelled autorelease: tagged, so release-please's state is now consistent. There are no commits on main after the release commit, so the correct outcome is no release PR until new work lands.
