test(gvisor): record live ARM64 containerd start trials - #1051
I ran the merged start receiver against a real, pinned runsc release in a dedicated Ubuntu ARM64 VM. The repeated-start runs received 20/20, 19/20 and 20/20 events. The missed event is preserved in the evidence, and the report explicitly blocks lifecycle integration until that loss is explained.
This adds the experiment setup, reproduction fixtures, sanitized receiver output, runtime inventory/start records, and offline checker results. It also links the existing procedure and trial template to the measured results.
Other observations:
Both completed concurrent cases received two starts. The final runtime ledger records both tasks RUNNING at the same time.
Root and child starts were received after fixing the fixture to use separate rootfs paths. The literal argv/cwd privacy canary was absent from the retained receiver output.
With the configured remote sink and no receiver, startup failed because the socket was unavailable.
After restarting the receiver, an existing task remained running and a new task produced a start. This does not establish recovery of the existing trace connection.
A controlled host bpftrace comparison observed three guest exec calls under runc and none under gVisor. This is a narrow host baseline; node-agent's own eBPF/exporter comparison remains outstanding.
All retained events reported zero sender drops, including the 19 received records from the failed run. That does not establish zero loss. The initial harness lost its in-memory timing ledger when the count assertion failed; the missing run retains its expected manifest and actual records, and the fixture now saves inventory/start results incrementally.
Validation:
Seven receiver tests and four focused probe tests executed successfully inside the Linux VM.
The test binaries and probe were cross-compiled from isolated copies of the merged source using Go 1.26.8 and the repository's pinned direct dependencies. This was not a full Go 1.27 main-module build. The actual-process test that invokes a compiler was not run in this VM.
All 14 Python checker tests passed. The checker passes seven retained case files and correctly rejects the missed-start run.
Evidence privacy scans, JSON parsing, local report links, fixture syntax, shell syntax and git diff checks passed.
No production collection or runtime configuration is enabled by this PR. CRI/Kubernetes joining, live slow-consumer/fairness testing, terminal and network semantics, systematic overhead measurements, managed GKE and x86_64 validation remain open.
Added results from an ARM64 gVisor trial, including concurrent and repeated starts, restart behavior, and a comparison with host-level observations.
Documented an unexplained missed start in one run and clarified that results do not establish complete lifecycle coverage or recovery for existing connections.
Listed outstanding validation areas, including node-agent comparison, event loss, fairness, and broader platform and workload coverage.
Adds ARM64 gVisor trial fixtures, recorded event evidence, and documentation. The records include a repeated-start run with 19 of 20 events, a failed checker result, receiver-restart observations, and a host BPF comparison. The cause of the missed start and complete lifecycle coverage remain unestablished.

Trial environment and shared harness docs/experiments/gvisor-start-20261026/bootstrap.sh, docs/experiments/gvisor-start-20261026/trial.py
Adds ARM64 VM setup and shared helpers for container commands, probe readiness, task lifecycle, and event evidence.
Adds expected counts, event records, checker results, evidence hashes, and a host BPF comparison for ordinary and gVisor runtimes. One repeated-start run records 19 of 20 expected events and fails the checker.

Documents the trial environment, methods, findings, limits, reproduction steps, and outstanding validation. Links existing gVisor documentation to the local trial.
kubescape/kubescape#3424 — The trial records runsc start events and compares host eBPF visibility under runc and gVisor; it does not implement the production ingestion pipeline.

The trial can lose its summarized loss result when a sender reports dropped events. This is limited to the experiment fixture and can be fixed before the next trial.

Record nonzero sender drops instead of aborting the trial.
If an event reports Dropped > 0, this assertion stops the fixture before it saves the scenario’s evidence summary. The JSONL remains, but results.json does not record that loss or the outcome of later scenarios. Record the drop count and a failed drop check in the ledger. Keep the offline checker’s rejection of nonzero drops.

Approve 9dfe335df0f9063e6c039c081df2e867a9a3ed63 against main at 1051d7b7366c23606605dfb05f22962746855b6c. No material merge blockers found. Independent correctness review recommends approval; architecture review is CLEAR.
This supplies the live experiment evidence missing from current main after receiver #1024 and trial tooling #1046. It is useful follow-through for accepted experiment #23 and issue #894. The report correctly preserves the 19/20 run, does not equate zero reported sender drops with zero loss, and blocks lifecycle integration until the missing start is explained. Concurrent-task evidence, restart observations and the narrow host-bpftrace comparison support the stated conclusions. No production startup, dependency, public API or collection configuration changes are introduced.
History searches covered open and closed/merged repository PRs and issues with gVisor, SecCheck, runsc, container/start, start/receiver and trial.py terms (100-result caps per query). No superseding experiment found within that scope; unlinked work cannot be excluded. #1024/#1046 are prerequisites rather than duplicates. Their earlier output/privacy/endpoint findings were fixed before approval. Design #14 is broader companion work; its approval dismissal explicitly concerned LFX timing, not technical rejection. The closed syscall-loss issue #918 concerns a different eBPF-to-profile pipeline and does not resolve this trace experiment.
Nonblocking: the existing sender-drop ledger thread is valid. trial.py:96 aborts on nonzero sender drops before saving the scenario summary; recording the failed check would improve future trials. Raw JSONL and earlier incremental records survive, and all retained records here have zero reported drops, so this does not invalidate the published evidence. No duplicate inline comment added. Copilot's review did not execute because of quota.
Fresh credential-free Bubblewrap validation with networking disabled, read-only source and private temporary storage: python3 -m unittest discover -s scripts -p test_check_gvisor_start_trial.py -v passed all 14 tests. Re-ran the checker against all eight retained cases: seven pass and the missed-start case fails with the recorded count-mismatch reason. Independently verified all 32 listed SHA-256 hashes, parsed retained JSON, scanned evidence for the literal canary, and parsed all three Python fixtures. sh -n .../bootstrap.sh and git diff --check origin/main passed. These establish artifact consistency, not independent authentication of the VM run. No new before/after production regression is applicable to this evidence-only change.
Cross-platform build CI, image build, completed component tests, CodeQL, DCO and GitGuardian passed; benchmark and some component tests remain running. I did not rerun live privileged ARM64/runsc trials, Go receiver tests/full-module build, node-agent exporter comparison, CRI/GKE/x86_64, fairness/loss stress or performance measurements. Those limits are explicit in the report and remain integration follow-up gates. This approval covers merging the experiment record.
Immediately before submission, confirmed unchanged head/current target, open/non-draft/mergeable status, and no new reviews or inline blockers.
