This adds an opt-in gVisor start source to the Kubernetes node-agent. It joins SecCheck container/start claims to the local CRI inventory and a live Kubernetes Pod before exporting an INFO RuntimeObservation through the existing OTLP log pipeline.
The join checks complete container and sandbox IDs, the configured runtime handler, Pod UID, node assignment and container membership. Existing namespace and label exclusions apply. Identity is checked before queueing and again before export, so a removed container is not attributed using a stale cache. The source owns a private CRI connection with bounded RPC deadlines and finishes before the existing OTEL shutdown flush.
The export keeps source=gvisor_trace, kind=container_started and the origin of the verified metadata. It carries no argv, cwd, actor/session identity or syscall interpretation. A start observation remains distinct from an exec event, profile entry or security alert. Inventory matching does not authenticate the trace sender or prove application execution.
I tested the rebuilt node-agent inside the local Linux ARM64 Kubernetes VM with a local OTLP collector. The retained run exported all 20 repeated starts and both overlapping workloads with matching runtime and Pod identities. The excluded namespace, unknown-ID frame and ordinary-runtime control produced no observations. The collector checked incoming OTLP requests for the synthetic argv/cwd marker before filtering retained fields; the marker was absent and no unexpected observation attributes were received.
Validation:
Linux ARM64 node-agent build with the repository's Go 1.27.0 toolchain and pinned dependencies.
Focused Linux tests for the receiver, integration, CRI resolver, Pod identity/policy, opt-in configuration and OTEL record contract.
Linux-targeted vet for the changed packages and command wiring.
Portable CRI/OTEL race tests on macOS, the capture privacy regression, and the existing 22 Python gVisor-tool tests.
Formatting, whitespace and retained-evidence checks passed.
This remains experimental and disabled by default. It requires an initialized OTLP log exporter and a self-managed runsc trace setup. The earlier missed start is not retrospectively explained. Detailed source health, recovery, fairness and loss accounting remain follow-ups; bounded queues and identity rechecks can still discard observations. No full repository suite, Linux race run, managed GKE or x86_64 validation is claimed. The report includes the actual binary hash, sanitized evidence, fixtures and reproduction limits. The test VM's original runtime and agent configuration was restored afterward.

Summary
Configuration, identity, and CRI inventory pkg/gvisor/integration.go, pkg/config/config.go, pkg/config/gvisor_start_test.go, pkg/gvisor/cri/*
Adds the gVisorStart configuration and identity types. CRI inventory checks runtime readiness and resolves eligible container, sandbox, and Pod identity. Tests cover configuration loading and CRI resolution cases.
Receiver verification and log export pkg/gvisor/integration_linux.go, pkg/gvisor/integration_linux_test.go, pkg/otelsetup/runtime_start.go, pkg/otelsetup/runtime_start_test.go
Verifies identity before queuing and again before emission. Exports verified observations as informational OTEL log records with runtime and Kubernetes attributes.
Node-agent startup and Pod matching cmd/gvisor_start_linux.go, cmd/gvisor_start_linux_test.go, cmd/main.go, docs/CONFIGURATION.md, docs/features/gvisor-start-source.md, Makefile, build/Dockerfile*
Starts collection when enabled and logs are ready. Matches resolved identity against Kubernetes Pod metadata and container names. Documents configuration, prerequisites, and operational limits. Build targets now compile the cmd package.
Trial execution, capture, and verification docs/experiments/gvisor-start-integration-20261102/trial.py, docs/experiments/gvisor-start-integration-20261102/parallel-trial.py, docs/experiments/gvisor-start-integration-20261102/verify.py, docs/experiments/gvisor-start-integration-20261102/otlp-capture/*, scripts/test_gvisor_integration_verifier.py
Adds scripts to run and verify trial workloads, plus an OTLP capture service that checks for a canary and writes allowlisted observation attributes. Tests cover retained-evidence verification and privacy and identity failures.
Trial report and retained evidence docs/experiments/gvisor-start-integration-20261102/README.md, docs/experiments/gvisor-start-integration-20261102/evidence/*, docs/experiments/gvisor-start-integration-20261102/evidence-sha256.json
Records the trial environment, runtime ledger, observations, verification results, and evidence digests. The report describes bounded trial results and remaining limitations.

Explanation
The title "feat(gvisor): export runtime-verified container starts" matches the main change. The PR adds an opt-in gVisor container-start source that checks identity through CRI and Kubernetes, then exports a RuntimeObservation through the existing OTLP log pipeline. The title is short, specific, and states the primary behavior. It omits the opt-in and experimental nature, which is acceptable for a title.

The clean case checks only the last JSON line. If a regression writes a CapturePrivacyFailure line before the clean RuntimeObservation, the last line still reports wire_canary_found as false. This subtest would still pass. The canary case already checks len(lines). The clean case emits exactly one line, so it can check the same count.

Assert the runtimeEndpoint override in the enabled config test.
The enabled case in TestGVisorConfigIsOptIn sets enabled, socketPath, and runtimeHandler. It does not set runtimeEndpoint. The assertions check only Enabled and RuntimeHandler, so RuntimeEndpoint is never checked.
Config loading decodes runtimeEndpoint into GVisorStart.RuntimeEndpoint today. A later change to config decoding could break this key without failing the test. A non-empty RuntimeEndpoint then reaches gvcri.New in cmd/gvisor_start_linux.go and could select the wrong runtime endpoint.

Update the enabled case in TestGVisorConfigIsOptIn to include a non-empty
runtimeEndpoint in its config input, then assert that
cfg.GVisorStart.RuntimeEndpoint matches that value when enabled. Preserve the
existing assertions and disabled-case behavior.
The fake ListContainers and PodSandboxStatus return fixed responses and ignore their requests. Resolve sends ListContainersRequest{Filter: &runtimeapi.ContainerFilter{Id: id}} and PodSandboxStatusRequest{PodSandboxId: c.PodSandboxId}. A change that drops the filter or sends the wrong sandbox ID still receives the same fixture, so these tests still pass.
Record the received ListContainersRequest and PodSandboxStatusRequest in the fake. Guard the stored values with a mutex if the test reads them concurrently. Then assert that GetFilter().GetId() equals the target container ID and that GetPodSandboxId() equals the sandbox ID.

Check for emissions after cancellation in the unresolved modes.
Check for emissions after cancellation in the unresolved modes.
In canceled_lookup, the lookup blocks until cancel(). The check before cancel() therefore cannot observe an emission in that mode. Nothing reads emitted after cancellation, so a regression that emits during shutdown would not fail this test. Receiver.Run drains queued OnStart calls before it returns, and RunIntegration returns that result directly. A check after <-done observes any emission made during shutdown.

In the cancellation test, check for unexpected emissions after shutdown
completes: once the test receives from done, verify emitted is empty for
unresolved modes, excluding verified mode. Keep the existing timeout and error
handling, and fail if a start is emitted during shutdown.
Cover the enabled, ready startup path with a test.
Cover the enabled, ready startup path with a test.
The two startup tests in cmd/gvisor_start_linux_test.go cover only disabled config and enabled config with logsReady=false. No test calls startGVisorCollection with enabled config, ready logs, a CRI endpoint, and a Pod client. The pkg/gvisor tests call RunIntegration directly, so they do not exercise the wrapper's inventory check, lookup setup, or goroutine start. A change that makes this path return an error would still pass the current tests.
Add a test for this path. Provide a fake CRI endpoint and a Pod client, because the wrapper creates the CRI client and runs inventory.Check with a 2-second timeout. Assert a nil error. Wait until the receiver socket accepts connections before asserting, because RunIntegration starts its listener in a goroutine. Then call stop().

P1 — binary and image builds fail even with the feature disabled.cmd/main.go:574 calls a function defined in cmd/gvisor_start_linux.go, but both Makefile:18 and build/Dockerfile:10 build ./cmd/main.go alone, excluding that file. This extends the existing build thread, which identifies the Makefile path.
The opt-in source addresses the gVisor visibility gap investigated in #1053; identity and privacy checks fit the stated limited observation contract. #1024, #1046, #1051, and #1052 are merged prerequisites, not duplicates. The #1051 report and maintainer approval deferred lifecycle integration pending explanation of a missed start; #1052 did not establish that explanation. This PR acknowledges the loss and disclaims complete lifecycle delivery, but maintainers should explicitly reconcile that earlier gate with this experimental integration. The design #14 approval dismissal concerned scheduling, not technical rejection. Bounded all-state searches by gVisor, SecCheck, runsc, container-start, receiver and affected symbols found no superseding implementation; unlinked or differently worded work may have been missed.
Reviewed the production identity, policy, cancellation and export paths and changed tests statically. No additional confirmed production blocker found. Existing CI confirms both build failures; cross-platform build, CodeQL, DCO and GitGuardian passed, while component tests were skipped. No local PR code was executed because an isolated credential-free environment was not established; live gVisor, targeted Go tests and independent reproduction remain unverified. The existing optimized-Python verifier concern is separate from the production build blocker.

Stage both verification files before publishing either one.
main() writes verified-runtime-ledger.json before verification.json, and each write uses open('x'). An interruption or write error between the two leaves the ledger without its result. Rerunning then fails at the first open('x'), so someone must delete the orphan file by hand. Check both destinations before any write, and stage both files under temporary names before renaming them into place. The pre-check does not cover an interruption between the renames.

The earlier build blocker is resolved: the Makefile and production and debug Dockerfiles now build the cmd package. The benchmark and image build pass on the updated commit. The verifier now uses explicit checks under optimized Python and adds negative tests. The partial experiment-output write is a recoverable tooling issue, nonblocking for this experimental source.
The opt-in source addresses the gVisor visibility gap; the earlier review covered identity checks, policy, shutdown and privacy boundaries. Merged #1024, #1046, #1051, #1052 and #1053 are prerequisites, not duplicates. The earlier missed start remains unexplained; this integration explicitly disclaims complete lifecycle delivery, and the prior integration gate should remain relevant to any stronger delivery claim. The prior design #14 approval dismissal concerned scheduling, not technical rejection. Bounded all-state searches for gVisor, SecCheck, runsc, start events and affected symbols found no superseding implementation; differently worded or unlinked work could have been missed.
Reviewed the new diff and CI results statically. Cross-platform build and component checks also passed. I did not run the PR code locally, the new verifier tests, or live gVisor trials: a credential-free isolated execution environment was not established. The approval does not imply independent verification of the retained experiment.
