feat(gvisor): report collector health and local event loss - #1072
The gVisor integration now exports verified starts, but operators still need a way to tell when collection is disconnected, rejecting events or falling behind. This adds periodic source-health reports and accounts for the local stages between receiver admission and OTEL submission.
When the source is enabled, node-agent submits a RuntimeSourceHealth log every 30 seconds and a final snapshot before the existing OTEL shutdown flush. It reuses the receiver diagnostics from #1052 and adds active connections, canceled queued starts, failed identity rechecks, export submissions and listener failures. The reports use fixed states and numeric fields without retaining workload identities, frame contents, argv, cwd or raw errors.
Each connection can now occupy at most 16 of the shared queue's 128 entries. This reserves capacity for other established connections when one sender floods the receiver. It also means a burst from one connection can be dropped before the shared queue is full; those drops are counted. This is admission fairness between connections, not authenticated fairness between sandboxes.
Listener failures retry with delays from one to 30 seconds. Retries preserve existing socket paths and trace-session ownership. The tests cover recovery after removing a conflicting path, reconnecting clients, connection saturation, transient identity lookup failure, cancellation and a busy sender alongside a quiet one. They also keep ordinary queue draining and the probe's blocked-output cleanup covered.
The documentation explains the accounting boundaries. A submitted observation is not acknowledged OTLP delivery, and a frame with a nonzero cumulative sender-drop field is not a count of distinct lost starts. A listening or connected source does not prove complete tracing or application execution. The historical missed start remains unexplained.
Validation:
The complete pkg/gvisor suite passed three consecutive runs with the Linux ARM64 race detector, using Go 1.27.1 in a network-disabled container.
The Linux probe suite passed with the race detector, including its actual-process output cleanup test.
Linux health-log contract and command-level gVisor identity, policy and startup tests passed.
The Linux ARM64 node-agent binary built from ./cmd with Go 1.27.0. Linux-targeted vet passed for pkg/gvisor, pkg/otelsetup and cmd.
All 28 Python gVisor-tool tests, formatting and git diff --check passed.
This validates local failure handling with synthetic seqpacket senders. No new live runsc/CRI trial, full repository suite, managed GKE test or end-to-end exporter-loss measurement is claimed. The source remains experimental and disabled by default.

Walkthrough
The gVisor receiver adds per-connection queue limits and health counters. A stateful collector retries listener failures and tracks collection outcomes. The command emits periodic and shutdown health records, and documentation describes the reported counters and their limits.

The experimental source is mergeable with bounded follow-up: startup failures omit health records, listener retries omit the documented warning, and cleanup can temporarily report an inaccurate listener state. Strengthening handshake assertions would improve recovery-test confidence.

Explanation
The title "feat(gvisor): report collector health and local event loss" matches the main change. The PR adds periodic and shutdown RuntimeSourceHealth reports from a gVisor collector, plus accounting for local event loss through per-connection queue limits and drop counters. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional commit prefix. It does not name every part of the change, such as listener retries, but that detail is not required.

handshakeClient returns the socket after any successful unix.Read. A rejected handshake closes the socket, so unix.Read returns (0, nil). A wrong reply returns bytes without an error. In either case the helper returns a socket that did not complete the handshake.
Two callers depend on the helper result, and neither has a later check that would detect this:
The rebinding call at line 157 discards the returned fd. The next statement only stops the receiver. A restarted listener that closes the handshake still passes this test.
The slot-recovery call at line 183 is followed only by the counter checks at lines 185-186. A receiver that does not reuse the freed slot still passes this test.
Compare the reply with the expected bytes. The expected value uses the same encoding as the receiver, so the test does not need a hardcoded protocol version.

Update handshakeClient to validate the bytes returned by unix.Read against the
expected handshake reply, using the receiver’s existing encoding and
protocol-version value rather than a hardcoded version. Reject empty or
mismatched replies before returning the socket, while preserving the existing
read-error handling.
Emit a health snapshot when startup validation fails.
When inventory.Check fails, startGVisorCollection returns before creating the collector or starting the health reporter. The caller logs only a warning, so the enabled source produces no RuntimeSourceHealth record. Emit a stopped snapshot on this startup-error path so health consumers can distinguish it from a disabled source.

Restore the listener-failure warning, or correct the documentation that promises it.
Collector.Run now retries receiver errors and returns nil. The command warning at cmd/gvisor_start_linux.go:77 runs only when Collector.Run returns an error, so a failed bind no longer produces it. No other log call in pkg/gvisor reports the failure. docs/features/gvisor-start-source.md:109 still says a receiver failure logs a fixed warning.

Clear listening before the listener cleanup starts.
After an accept error, Receiver.Run drains clients and queued starts before it clears listening. A health tick in that window reports listening or connected even though the accept loop has stopped. Clearing the flag first makes the state report retrying_listener during that window.

Review verdict: approve (head 0245d3c1, base main).
Purpose. Adds a periodic (30s) and final RuntimeSourceHealth OTEL log for the experimental gVisor start source, plus a per-connection cap of 16 of the 128 queue slots and listener retry with 1–30s backoff. It follows the merged #1052 and #1069. I found no duplicate or superseding PR (searched gvisor PRs; #1024/#1046/#1051/#1052/#1053/#1069 are all earlier merged work) and no prior rejection of this approach.
Findings. No blockers. Code read: Collector.Run retry loop, Receiver per-connection pending accounting, EmitGVisorHealth, and the cmd wiring.
Per-connection pending is incremented before the enqueue and decremented on drop or dequeue. deliverStarts decrements before the cancel check, so there is no leak.
The retry loop preserves the no-unlink and no-trace-session behavior, because Receiver.Run still refuses to start on an existing path.
Health fields are fixed numeric keys with no identities or raw errors, and counters are clamped for int64.
Nonblocking (optional): CodeRabbit's three minor points look valid but are not blockers.
listening stays true until the cleanup defer completes.
Retries bypass the command-level "source stopped" warning, so the docs promise should match.
There is no stopped snapshot if inventory.Check fails at startup.
Validation (I ran these).
go test -race -count=1 ./pkg/gvisor/ ./pkg/otelsetup/ passes at the PR head. This needed TMPDIR=/tmp, because the default sandbox temp path exceeded the unix socket path limit.
go vet on pkg/gvisor, pkg/otelsetup and cmd is clean.
CI at the head is all green: component tests, CodeQL and DCO.
Gap: there is no live runsc/CRI test, which the PR itself discloses. Behavior beyond the synthetic seqpacket tests was not exercised.
