Summary

  • Re-pins vendor/tinyagents to v2.2.0 (845a75f9: every durable store on the tinystoragedrivers ports, SQLite/File/JSONL impls deleted, session::legacy importer added) and vendor/tinyjuice to v0.9.1 (2499c834), whose nested tinyagents copy is now the same v2.2.0 (tinyjuice#77 + the 0.9.1 release in tinyjuice#78; registry version and digests taken from the published checksum.toml).
  • The default storage URL is now sqlite:<workspace>/storage for desktop, CLI and TUI. The session store is ReboundSessionStores over that backend. Classic mode is retired: StorageMode::Classic, storage::local::open_default/open_standing/repo/ImportPlan and the four small stores' legacy-table code are gone; a classic URL is read as unset with a warning.
  • When a different user signs in, storage::rebind re-resolves the URL for the new workspace, reopens the backend, repoints the session store and the process slot together, then runs the importers there. It runs first in rebind_after_credential_change; a failed reopen is an error and keeps the previous backend (never a quiet continue on the previous user's data).
  • storage::import::sessions adds the sessions/transcripts/turn-state importer over TinyAgents' legacy reader: sessions.db is copied with VACUUM INTO (the reader refuses a WAL sidecar), each session_raw transcript lands in the agent its stem names (else the default agent), turn states in the default agent; marker per workspace, legacy files untouched.
  • Every store the tinyagents release removed the file/SQLite version of now comes from the backend: the run ledger (agent::session_store::{with_ledger, ledger_sync}), run status/journal/goals/todos, teams, workflow runs, the command center, the detached-task ledger (DriverTaskStore), background completions (DriverCompletionStore), the delegation checkpointer, and the tool-search embedding cache (DriverEmbeddingCache).
  • Real bug fixed on the way: the fenced backend wrapper did not forward atomic_batch_checked, so the ledger's team-task claim answered Unsupported(ValidatedBatch) on every driver.

Part of #7522.

Problem

Storage was split between the ports and per-crate/classic stores. Hosts with no URL kept per-domain SQLite files, JSONL transcripts and JSON stores, and tinyagents v2.2.0 deleted the SQLite/File/JSONL implementations the host was still calling.

Solution

  • Host adaptation of tinyagents v2.2.0. The workspace-keyed free functions (run_ledger::upsert_agent_run(&dir, ..), open_session_stores, FileStatusStore, SqliteCheckpointer, Jsonl*Store, transcript::import) are replaced by the tenant's ledger/stores in the storage backend (agent::session_store: require_ledger, with_ledger, with_ledger_async, ledger_sync, stores_for, status_store_for). SessionTeamLedger/SessionWorkflowStore take the ledger port.
  • Decisions across scopes. An approval parked in an agent's or profile's scope is decided in the scope it was parked in (RequestRoute.docs), so an RPC with no agent of its own reaches the row; list_pending_for_agent reads the agent's scope. Before, these only worked because the classic database was shared by all agents (the gate tests that pin this took 10 minutes to time out before the fix).
  • Small stores (approvals, devices, notifications, task sources): the CRUD is documents-only; the legacy SQLite reader moved to each store_import.rs, which only the importer calls, on a scratch copy of the file. The storage-bypass allowlist now names those four readers instead of the retired fallbacks.
  • Default per workspace. With no backend installed (a unit test, an embedder, a SaaS core with no URL) a store opens the same default for its own workspace on first use (local::backend_for), so there is no file-shaped implementation left for them. A SaaS core with no URL keeps one default database per profile workspace (WorkspaceSessionStores).
  • Notification core records keep the fixed local workspace key when the backend is the workspace's own default, so a renamed workspace still finds them.
  • session_import.run is now a manual retry of the boot import (dry_run lists the legacy sources). The file-era session dual-write, shadow read, projector and their kill switches are removed; agent.session_dual_write / session_shadow_reads stay in the config schema as retired no-ops so existing config.toml files load.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated (happy path + failure/edge): storage::rebind_tests (new workspace reopened, other workspace's database separate, legacy files of the new workspace imported, explicit URL/same workspace/no URL untouched, failed open keeps the previous backend), storage::import::sessions_tests (transcript to its agent, turn state, untouched files, marker, unknown agent, stem matching), per-store store_import_tests (lossless import, legacy file byte-identical, second run no-op, undecodable row retried, old schema scrubbed), fenced_backend_tests (checked batch passes through and conflicts), agent::session_store tests (per-workspace isolation, no-op recover, rebind), session_import schema tests, delivery_recovery (SaaS) on the new queue, storage_default_import_e2e (real binary, default URL and explicit URL), cli_storage_url_e2e, storage_*_e2e, json_rpc_e2e run-ledger paths.
  • Diff coverage >= 80%: not measured locally (the core coverage run is too slow here).
  • Coverage matrix updated: N/A, no feature rows change.
  • All affected feature IDs listed: N/A.
  • No new external network dependencies introduced.
  • Manual smoke checklist updated: N/A.
  • Linked issue closed via Closes #NNN in ## Related.

Impact

  • Desktop/CLI/TUI upgrade. On the first boot after upgrading, approval.db, devices.db, notifications.db, sources.db, the tinyflows files, sessions.db, session_raw/*.jsonl and turn-state JSON are imported into <workspace>/storage once; the legacy files are never modified or deleted. tinyagents_store/ and graph_checkpoints.db are not imported (their consumers are gone; nothing read them after the earlier cutover).
  • Embedders. Runtime still opens a backend only for an explicit URL/seam (storage::explicit_url); stateless workspaces still require a session store.
  • SaaS. Behaviour with a URL is unchanged. With no URL each profile now keeps its stores in the default database of its own workspace.
  • Pins. vendor/tinyagents v2.2.0; vendor/tinyjuice v0.9.1 + registry version/digests from its release.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Storage now uses a single backend per workspace by default, including for sessions and app data. Configured storage URLs remain supported.
    • Legacy data—including sessions, transcripts, and older domain databases—is imported into the backend without modifying the original files.
    • Changing workspaces updates the default backend and imports available legacy data for the new workspace.
  • Changes

    • The classic storage option and session dual-write and shadow-read settings are retired; existing configuration entries for those settings remain loadable but have no effect.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request changes storage defaults to a workspace-scoped backend and moves session and domain persistence away from legacy file and SQLite fallbacks. It adds backend rebinding and read-only legacy imports, and updates runtime integrations, tests, and documentation.

Changes: Workspace-Scoped Storage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Backend resolution and rebinding
crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/config/schema/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/security/credentials/ops/user_scope.rs, crates/openhuman-embed/src/runtime/*
Unset storage configuration resolves to sqlite:<workspace>/storage outside SaaS mode. Local backends are cached by workspace, and managed backends can be rebound with session stores when the URL changes.
Session stores and legacy session import
crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/session_store/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/session_import/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/import/*, crates/openhuman-rpc/src/session_store/*
Workspace and rebound providers route session storage through the backend. Session imports read legacy database snapshots, transcripts, and turn-state files; the retry controller reports sources and import outcomes.
Domain persistence and legacy readers

Cron, flow, notification, task-source, approval, and device operations use storage-backed stores instead of their former SQLite fallback paths. Dedicated importer modules read the legacy databases.
Agent orchestration and ledger access
crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/orchestration/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/session_db/schemas.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/goals/store.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/tinyagents/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/web_chat/progress_bridge.rs
Ledger operations use workspace-scoped session-store helpers. Completion and task ledgers use driver-backed stores, and journal, status, goals, and todo access use session-store helpers.
Host integration and validation
crates/openhuman-rpc/src/host.rs, crates/openhuman-embed/src/host_internals.rs, tests/*storage*, tests/saas_mode/*, scripts/ci/*
Host builders resolve and attach storage-backed session providers. Tests and CI rules now check workspace-default storage and read-only legacy import behavior.
Embedding cache and release pins
crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/tinyagents/discovery/*, crates/openhuman-tinyhumans/src/jev/ranker.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/modules/registry/records_memory_juice.rs, vendor/*
Embedding rankers can attach a scoped driver cache. The Tinyjuice asset records and vendored subproject references are updated.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3d923

Background task completions can be routed to the wrong agent scope or kept only in memory. A manual import for a different workspace can write that workspace's sessions into the active database. Fix the completion router keying before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 3d923

Account switching becomes a boundary for nearly all durable state. A failed sign-out can leave the previous account’s data store selected, and a manual import can copy another workspace’s data into the active store. Existing safeguards limit disruption, but ownership and recovery are not consistently enforced across these transitions.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: Sign-out clears identity, removes the credential, and deactivates the user directory before reopening signed-out storage. If reopening fails, the previous backend remains installed, and subsequent storage lookups still prefer it over the requested workspace. Sign-in rollback removes the newly stored profile but does not restore persisted active-user selection. Successful rebinding also publishes session providers before the process backend, allowing mixed-backend observations. Returning an error protects the old backend from replacement but does not establish a fail-closed account boundary. The default-installed backend newly extends this exposure across default durable stores.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The manual session-import controller accepts a workspace override as its filesystem source but preferentially writes into the currently installed backend. The importer then asserts source ownership using the destination ledger’s scope and imports ledger and turn-state data into the default agent. Unlike the base’s workspace-directed import, a differing override can now merge another workspace’s private state into the active backend. The handler does not establish source ownership or an explicit cross-workspace transfer decision; upstream authorization and downstream scope enforcement were not fully resolved.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The established transition concern affects the previous and next workspaces served by a single-user process, across durable stores using the installed backend. Manual-import filesystem reach is bounded by the process’s read permissions, not by the workspace supplied as the destination. Cross-tenant SaaS exploitation was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A storage-open failure during sign-out occurs after credential and identity teardown but before backend replacement. Calls subsequently admitted to ordinary storage accessors can still resolve the former account’s backend. Scheduler shutdown reduces background activity but does not itself fence these accessors; complete post-error request admission was not verified.
  • inferred — A caller able to invoke manual import can supply another readable workspace. The handler passes that workspace as the source while retaining the installed destination; the importer accepts a trusted-host ownership assertion derived from that destination. This establishes a cross-workspace transfer path, but whether an untrusted caller can invoke it remains an authorization coverage gap.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Credential mutations take a shared mutation lock, so an unordered pair of credential changes is not established. Process-wide credential operations are refused in SaaS mode, and SaaS storage-scope resolution rejects calls without a profile. These controls limit the account-transition concern rather than proving all consumers observe an atomic transition.
  • observed — Reopening completes before installation, and previously issued session handles remain tied to their original backend. Retaining those handles prevents their writes from automatically following the new account’s backend; it is intentional in-flight ownership preservation, not independently treated as a vulnerability.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Legacy SQLite databases are opened read-only and copied with VACUUM INTO to a temporary workspace. Import completion markers follow record processing, and failed imports remain retryable. These mechanisms preserve the migration source and contain partial-import damage, but do not roll back account publication or reconcile a downgrade.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Publish workspace identity and backend selection through a generation-bound transition. On failure, either restore the prior selection coherently or fence new storage access until recovery; preserve already-issued handles only under their original ownership. Use one publication boundary for session and domain-store selection.
  • proposed — Make manual import distinguish same-workspace retry from an authorized cross-workspace transfer. Validate source ownership and make destination selection explicit before asserting trusted-host ownership or writing into the active agent’s scope.

…override

When a workspace override differs from the configured workspace, open a
backend bound to the override instead of reusing the installed one, which
is tied to the configured workspace. This prevents session imports from
writing into the wrong storage location.

Tiny Sweeper review

Since #7686 (storage #7638) the CLI defaults to sqlite:<workspace>/storage,
user secrets are enc2: documents in that backend instead of secrets.enc,
and session_import_run reports per-domain storage imports. Two e2e tests
still asserted the old file and the old response shape:

- headless_default_keyring_stores_provider_secrets_encrypted now asserts
the secret is nowhere in plaintext under the workspace, an enc2: record
exists, and a fresh process lists the credential.
- session_import_plans_imports_then_skips_on_rerun now asserts the dry run
finds session_raw and imports nothing, the real run writes messages, and
  a rerun is AlreadyDone.
