Summary

  • Removes the no-backend file fallbacks in the cost tracker, sub-agent sessions, the Composio state store and agent artifact records. Each store is now documents-only; with no installed backend it opens the workspace default (sqlite:<workspace>/storage, storage::local), the same one a host would.
  • Shrinks the storage-bypass allowlist by those five fallback sites (cost tracker, sub-agent sessions store, Composio file_store, two in artifact store.rs); FALLBACK is gone as an allowed reason.
  • storage::local::open now resolves the acting scope before opening the workspace backend, so a SaaS call with no agent fails closed without creating a database.
  • The artifact legacy migration reads records from the storage backend (which imports a legacy meta.json on first read) instead of scanning meta.json files.
  • Keeps storage::rusqlite and documents why (see below).

Problem

Hosts always install a storage backend (#7686), so the file implementations next to each document store were dead in production and only kept a second code path alive (#7688, first bullet).

Solution

  • tracker_documents, subagent_sessions::store_documents, composio::file_store_documents and artifacts::store_documents take the workspace dir and use Repo::current_for. The JSONL/JSON file code paths are deleted.
  • The Composio store API is now load/update(config, name) instead of path-based, since the path only ever supplied the document id.
  • The legacy state/costs.jsonl import and the artifact meta.json/args.json import are unchanged.
  • Tests: the file-mode tests became workspace-default-backend tests (cost, sub-agent sessions, Composio, artifacts, migrate); storage-bypass.test.mjs is repaired (two cases referenced allowlist entries that no longer existed on main, so they were already failing).
  • storage::rusqlite stays: its remaining users open foreign SQLite files (five read-only legacy importers on a scratch copy, plus the vault watcher's per-machine mtime table). SqliteNative opens the driver's own database and schema and its run_blocking hands out a rusqlite connection anyway, so it cannot replace them. Doc comment updated.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated (happy path + at least one failure / edge case)
  • Diff coverage >= 80%: not measured locally; focused suites (cost, orchestration, artifacts, composio, storage, flows: 1723 tests) pass
  • Coverage matrix updated: N/A, behaviour-preserving refactor
  • No new external network dependencies introduced
  • Manual smoke checklist: N/A, no release-cut surface
  • Linked issue: partial, see Related

Impact

  • Hosts: none (a backend is always installed). Embedders/tests with no backend: these four stores now use the workspace SQLite default instead of JSON files. Old subagent_sessions.json, composio_*.json are not imported (as already the case whenever a backend was installed).
  • Pre-existing on main, unrelated: check-openhuman-rust-layout fails on core/observability.rs (3479 > 3477 lines).

Related

Part of #7522
Part of #7688

Remaining on #7688: tinyagents-side path-bound JSONL transcripts, threads and artifact/media stores (upstream deferral; none needed to remove these host fallbacks); storage::rusqlite re-export (documented above); diff coverage for #7686; the two pre-existing failures (embed session_store CleanupPending, boot_guard::domain_families_are_refused_until_they_are_isolated); optional legacy importers for the old sub-agent/Composio JSON files.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Artifact records, sub-agent sessions, Composio state, and cost tracking now use the workspace storage backend when no other backend is installed.
    • Existing artifact metadata and cost records are imported into the backend, while legacy files remain in place.
    • Composio state updates retain their conflict-safe behavior.
  • Documentation
    • Updated storage guidance to clarify which data uses the workspace backend and which still uses local files.

Subagent session state is now written to and read from a document store
instead of being held only in memory, so sessions survive restarts and
can be inspected after the fact. Tests cover the new store operations.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Added cost tracking for document processing so that per-document usage is
recorded alongside existing cost entries. This lets callers attribute spend to
individual documents rather than only to aggregate runs.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds a file store for persisting Composio documents, with a dedicated
documents module handling storage and retrieval. This gives the
integration a place to keep document data alongside its other state.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a store for persisting Composio identity mappings and a
preferences module for tracking per-scope opt-in state. This gives the
integration a durable place to record which identities and scopes have
been authorized across sessions.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds test coverage for the composio file store, document handling, identity store, and profile tool execution mock paths. These tests exercise the existing behaviour without changing it.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add a store for document artifacts alongside the existing artifact
store, so documents can be persisted and retrieved through the same
agent artifact pipeline.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Remove allowlist entries for JSON writes that no longer bypass the storage
layer, so the check no longer suppresses violations that cannot occur.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The bypass checker no longer accepts a store's own file fallback as an
allowed exception, since a store with no installed backend now uses the
workspace default instead. Allowed entries are limited to read-only
legacy importers and per-machine, bootstrap or non-record state, and the
unused fallback reason constant was dropped.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds mock-based tests covering the profile tools execute path in the
Composio integration, verifying the request handling and response
shaping without hitting the live API.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds coverage for scope preference handling and profile tool execution
against mocks, plus scope gate behaviour, so the composio integration
paths are exercised without hitting live services.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds coverage for the artifact store migration path, exercising the
conversion logic to catch regressions in how existing artifacts are
upgraded.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
… isolation

Adds tests exercising the global cost tracker and the running subagents
tenant paths, covering accumulation and per-tenant isolation behaviour
that previously had no direct test coverage.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Ensure the local storage writer creates any missing parent directories
before persisting a file, so writes no longer fail when the target
directory has not been created yet.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The allowlist test fixtures now reference the security approval store import and desktop control files instead of the cron policy and platform cost tracker paths, and the pinned snippet is shared between the two assertions so both cases exercise the same allowlisted line.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Renamed a test case to say allowlisted sites rather than fallbacks, and moved the verbatim-copy fixture to a different file path so it no longer collides with an allowlisted entry.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reorganized the artifact migration code to separate concerns and make the
migration steps easier to follow. No behaviour change.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The comment on the rusqlite re-export now names both remaining consumers, the legacy importers and the vault watcher's per-machine mtime table, and explains why SqliteNative cannot replace the re-export for either. It also notes the re-export is temporary and goes away once the one-time legacy import window closes.

📝 Walkthrough

Artifact records, sub-agent sessions, Composio state, and cost records now use the installed document backend or workspace default instead of store-owned file fallbacks. Legacy artifact and cost data are imported through document storage. Tests and storage-bypass checks reflect these paths.

Changes: Workspace-backed record storage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Artifact records and legacy migration
crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/artifacts/*
Artifact metadata and arguments use document storage. Migration enumerates stored records, skips invalid IDs, and leaves legacy sidecars in place. Tests verify sidecar readability through the store.
Sub-agent session storage
crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/orchestration/subagent_sessions/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/orchestration/*tests.rs
Session load and save use the workspace document store. Tests save and verify sessions through the store instead of checking the former JSON-file fallback.
Composio named state storage
crates/openhuman-core/src/integrations/composio/file_store*
Composio reads, writes, and updates named document values through the workspace backend. The APIs use configuration and value names instead of paths.
Composio identity and scope callers
crates/openhuman-core/src/integrations/composio/identity_store*, crates/openhuman-core/src/integrations/composio/ops/scope_prefs*, crates/openhuman-core/src/integrations/composio/ops_profile_tools_execute_mock_tests.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/integrations/composio/tools/scope_gate_tests.rs, tests/raw_coverage/composio_raw_coverage_e2e.rs
Identity and scope-preference operations pass configuration and named state keys to the file store. Tests verify stored values rather than workspace file paths.
Cost ledger storage and aggregation
crates/openhuman-core/src/platform/cost/*
Cost records use the current workspace document store, with legacy ledger import and host-duplicate filtering. Aggregate totals are rebuilt from records on each read.
Storage resolution and bypass checks
crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/*, scripts/ci/check-storage-bypass.mjs, scripts/__tests__/storage-bypass.test.mjs, docs/gitbooks/en/developing/architecture/storage.md
Storage scope resolution now precedes backend opening. Documentation and bypass checks describe workspace-default storage, legacy importers, and remaining file-backed state.

Subagent sessions and Composio state files written before the document
store are now imported on first load, with the old file renamed to
`.migrated` so the import runs once and the data stays recoverable. The
architecture docs were updated to note that the workspace sqlite store is
now the default backend.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The Composio document store now refers to ErrorKind directly instead of
the fully qualified tinystoragedrivers path. The storage architecture
notes were corrected to mention that Composio state and sub-agent session
files are also imported once and renamed to *.migrated.

Assert the expected scope refusal in the test.

💡 Codex Review

let all = match list_artifacts(workspace_dir, 0, usize::MAX, None).await {

P1 Badge Preserve migrated artifacts for agent-scoped reads

When a library runtime upgrades a workspace that still has legacy artifact metadata, bootstrap runs this migration under the default local scope before any Agent exists. This call imports meta.json into that local document, and migrate_one then records the moved path only there and deletes the legacy bytes while leaving meta.json pointed at them; the first real agent-scoped read subsequently imports that stale metadata and can no longer read the artifact. Keep the legacy metadata resolvable across agent scopes (or migrate in the owning scope) before removing the old bytes.

AGENTS.md reference: AGENTS.md:L435-L445

if let Err(err) = std::fs::rename(&path, path.with_extension("json.migrated")) {

P2 Badge Keep legacy sessions available to every agent scope

When multiple library agents share an upgraded workspace, current(...) binds docs to the calling agent's scope, but this rename retires the one workspace session file after only the first agent imports it. A later agent therefore sees an empty collection and loses its durable/reusable sessions. Fresh evidence beyond the earlier comment is the new scope-specific import followed by this workspace-global retirement; retain the source or track migration per scope.

AGENTS.md reference: AGENTS.md:L435-L445

if let Err(error) = tokio::fs::rename(&path, &migrated).await {

P2 Badge Import legacy Composio identities into every agent scope

When multiple library agents share a workspace upgraded from the file fallback, current(&config.workspace_dir) opens an agent-scoped document, yet this rename removes the workspace-wide source after the first scope imports it. Later agents then load an empty composio_identities.json value and their persisted connected-account identity facets disappear. Fresh evidence beyond the earlier comment is the scope-specific imported document plus this workspace-global retirement; use per-scope migration state or retain the source.

AGENTS.md reference: AGENTS.md:L435-L445

The keyring or `secrets.enc` and the path-bound artifact bytes and media still use files. Cost tracking, the Composio state, sub-agent sessions and agent artifact records have no file fallback: with no backend installed they use the workspace's own default (`sqlite:<workspace>/storage`), the same as a host would, and a legacy cost ledger, artifact `meta.json`, Composio state file or sub-agent session file is imported once (and the file renamed to `*.migrated`). The vault watcher's mtime table stays a per-machine SQLite file on purpose, because its rows are absolute paths on one host. On first read with a backend installed, the auth-profile and HTTP-credential stores copy the records in their files into the backend, and the keyring adopts a secret it finds in the process backend. The source files are left untouched.

P2 Badge Correct artifact legacy-file retirement guidance

Artifact imports do not create a meta.json.migrated file: store_documents::import_legacy deliberately leaves metadata in place, and the artifact migration removes only the old content bytes. Grouping artifact metadata with the three stores that rename their source gives operators incorrect recovery and cleanup expectations, so document artifact retention separately.
