Summary

  • Legacy-file regression (Storage: remaining transcript/thread/media stores and rusqlite re-export (follow-up to #7688) #7768): the one-time Composio (integrations/<name>) and sub-agent (subagent_sessions.json) importers no longer rename the legacy file to .migrated. They record completion with a marker document in the backend (composio_state_import, subagent_sessions_import) and leave the files byte-identical.
  • vendor/tinyagents moves to tinyagents main (fed928f7, which contains v2.4.0 and the driver-backed conversation store; the JSONL thread store is gone, tinyagents#440). This completes the Storage follow-up to #7743: tinybus move, tinyagents pin to main, profile-scope sweep #7781 item "move vendor/tinyagents back to main".
  • threads::store is now backend-backed: a workspace-keyed synchronous facade (threads/store/backend.rs, same API as before so the ~50 callers are untouched) over DriverConversationStore, on the conversation scope (profile scope in SaaS, else local).
  • One-time, read-only import of the old memory/conversations JSONL tree into the backend (threads/store/legacy_import.rs), with a marker document; the files are never modified.
  • Fix found on the way: the host's fenced storage wrapper dropped StreamStore::append_batch_if_offset, so every conversation append failed with Unsupported(ConditionalStreamAppend) on SQLite. It is forwarded (and fenced) now.
  • pnpm rust:layout is green (was failing on agent/session_host/driver.rs at 751 lines; trimmed one comment line; core/observability.rs is back at the limit).

Problem

#7766 made the Composio and sub-agent importers rename legacy files, contradicting #7522 (imports read legacy files only, never modify them). Separately, tinyagents removed its path-bound JSONL thread store, so the host could not move past 869503c.

Solution

  • Markers live in the same scope as the imported data, in a collection of their own so load never sees them as records. A second import is stopped by the marker, not by the file (tested by changing the legacy file after the first import).
  • Conversation errors keep the file store's wording (thread <id> not found, message <id> not found in thread <id>) that threads::ops maps to typed errors.
  • tinyagents main had regressed the nested vendor/tinytools gitlink (an auto-commit checkpoint in feat(upsell): usage-aware banners, rate-limit modal, and shared usage hook #440) to a commit without ProcessCleanup::hold, which broke the sandbox shell build. Fixed upstream first: tinyagents#443 (merged), then pinned here.
  • storage::rusqlite re-export: kept. The read-only legacy importers and the vault watcher's mtime table still open foreign SQLite files; the doc comment now records that it was re-checked for Storage: remaining transcript/thread/media stores and rusqlite re-export (follow-up to #7688) #7768.
  • Pre-existing failures: embed session_store (CleanupPending) and boot_guard::domain_families_are_refused_until_they_are_isolated both pass on this branch (fixed on main / by the tinyagents bump).

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated: byte-identity of legacy files for both importers, marker stops a re-import, JSONL conversation import (deleted thread, renames, message order, marker), backend round trip incl. search/delete, fenced conditional append (memory + sqlite)
  • Diff coverage >= 80%: CI reports it; every changed behaviour has tests
  • Coverage matrix: N/A, behaviour-only change
  • No new external network dependencies
  • Manual smoke checklist: N/A, no release-cut surface
  • Linked issue referenced via Part of #7768 in ## Related

Impact

Desktop: existing chat threads are imported once into the storage backend on first use of a workspace; the legacy JSONL files stay on disk untouched. No wire/RPC change.

Related

Validation

  • cargo check (root, product features with tests, app), pnpm rust:layout, check-feature-forwarding, check-crate-chain, check-submodule-monotonic upstream/main: pass.
  • Full openhuman lib suite (RUST_MIN_STACK=16777216): all pass except 4 tests untouched by this change and failing on the same code paths regardless of it (media::generation::artifact_tool x2 and config::ops::files_dir_tests::boot_migrates_legacy_files_into_the_chosen_folder assert a meta.json the document-backed artifact store no longer writes; apply_env_overrides_commits_side_effects_to_runtime_proxy is order-dependent and passes alone).
  • cargo clippy -p openhuman --lib --tests -D warnings: two errors in files this PR does not touch (inference/http/backend.rs:77 redundant field name, storage/import/tinyflows_cron_tests.rs:45 useless conversion); nothing in changed files. If the pre-push hook trips on these, they are on upstream/main already.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Conversation history is now stored in the workspace backend, with existing conversations imported automatically on first access.
    • Legacy conversation and session files remain unchanged after import, and completed imports are not repeated.
    • Legacy state imports are tracked separately for each workspace.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Conditional storage updates now respect fencing, preventing writes based on stale stream offsets.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
…files

Legacy session and Composio state files are now imported once and recorded
with a marker document, so the original files are only read and stay
byte-identical rather than being renamed to `.migrated`. The marker also
short-circuits repeat imports, which previously relied on the rename to
avoid re-reading the file.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Update the legacy-import tests for subagent sessions and Composio
scopes to expect the original file to remain in place with unchanged
bytes and no `.migrated` sibling, and to confirm the import marker
alone prevents a second import.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
…acy file

The legacy import test now rewrites the legacy file after the first import and
checks that loading still returns the originally imported session, proving the
migration marker rather than the file contents prevents a second import.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a backend module for the threads store to hold the storage
implementation behind a dedicated file.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The conversation store now takes its collection specs from the legacy import module instead of a local empty helper, and the driver store is constructed before the schema declaration so it can be reused. This removes the duplicated no-op helper and keeps collection definitions in one place.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The thread store now resolves conversations through the process storage
backend instead of the retired path-bound JSONL store, keeping the existing
synchronous facade for callers. A one-time read-only import of the legacy
`memory/conversations` tree preserves previously persisted transcripts.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add tests for importing legacy jsonl conversations, verifying the
import runs only once per workspace and leaves the original files byte
identical, and that a workspace without legacy files starts empty. Also
cover the backend store round trip for threads, messages, search, and
deletion.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The fenced stream store now delegates append_batch_if_offset to the inner
backend instead of falling back to the trait default, which reported the
operation as unsupported and rejected every conversation append even on
drivers that implement it.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add tests asserting that the fenced backend wrapper forwards
append_batch_if_offset to the underlying driver instead of falling back to the
trait default, which returned Unsupported and rejected every conversation
append on the default SQLite backend. The shared helper is exercised against
both the in-memory and SQLite backends, checking offset assignment, conflict
reporting on a stale offset, and that the stream length stays unchanged.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The store now maps driver not-found errors back to the "thread <id> not
found" and "message <id> not found in thread <id>" text the file store
produced, so callers that match on that wording keep working. Each
operation passes the thread or message it addresses so the error can name
the right subject.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Update the rusqlite re-export note to record that both consumers are still present after re-checking tinyhumansai#7768, so the re-export stays. Also reword the threads module doc to describe storage as the storage backend rather than JSONL files.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reword the module-level doc comment on the session driver adapter to read more concisely, clarifying that the runtime session owns transcript and history state and supplies the immutable model history and tool declarations per call.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Update the vendored tinyagents submodule to a newer commit.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reformatted several call sites in the conversation store, legacy import, and composio file store to satisfy rustfmt line-width rules. No behaviour changes.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds a backend-backed conversation store and one-time legacy conversation import. It also updates subagent-session and Composio imports to record completion without modifying legacy files, and enables conditional stream appends through fenced storage.

Changes: Read-only legacy imports

Layer / File(s) Summary
Marker-based subagent-session and Composio imports
crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/orchestration/subagent_sessions/..., crates/openhuman-core/src/integrations/composio/..., crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/mod.rs
Both importers use backend markers to record completion and leave legacy files unchanged. Tests verify that the files remain byte-identical and that completed imports do not import later file changes.

Backend-backed conversation storage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Conversation storage facade
crates/openhuman-core/src/threads/store/backend.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/threads/store/mod.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/threads/mod.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/session_host/driver.rs, vendor/tinyagents
The store resolves the workspace backend and scope, then delegates thread and message operations to the driver. The module exports the backend facade and separately re-exports thread and message types.
Legacy conversation import
crates/openhuman-core/src/threads/store/legacy_import.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/threads/store/legacy_import_tests.rs
The importer folds legacy JSONL records, copies threads and messages not already present, and writes an import marker. Tests cover one-time import, unchanged legacy files, and store operations.

Conditional appends through fenced storage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Forward conditional stream appends
crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/fenced_backend.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/fenced_backend_tests.rs
FencedStreams forwards conditional appends through the fenced write path. Tests check successful appends and stale-offset conflicts with memory and SQLite backends.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e9332

Some legacy conversations or subagent sessions may remain unavailable, and simultaneous imports may duplicate messages. Resolve these import issues before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e9332

Moving conversation history into shared storage changes how requests retain their user identity and how imports are completed. The existing background handoff drops that identity, and completion markers can skip another workspace’s history. Hosted requests still fail closed, but identity continuity and migration recovery need attention.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new store derives its profile scope after the shared blocking wrapper has dropped the caller’s task-local identity. Conversation list, read, and write wrappers consequently fail closed in SaaS. Outside SaaS, a scoped caller differing from the process default can address the default context’s conversation scope instead. The old path-bound store received the workspace explicitly and did not require this identity transition.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Migration completion is keyed by destination scope rather than workspace source. When two legacy workspaces resolve to one installed backend and scope, the first conversation import’s process cache or persistent marker suppresses the second import. The new fixed subagent marker similarly skips the second workspace’s session file. Preserved files remain recoverable, but their records are absent from active storage, including durable session state used to resume earlier workers. Separate fallback databases and distinct profile scopes avoid this condition; shared-backend, same-scope use does not.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identity-continuity issue affects the shared conversation wrapper, including thread creation, listing, and message retrieval. Properly bound operations remain profile-scoped; installed-backend operations within one profile or local scope share history across workspace arguments. Cross-profile access in SaaS was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A request supplies conversation identifiers to a blocking operation that resolves storage identity after losing its task scope. SaaS rejects the operation before opening storage. Outside SaaS, access to a process-default scope is conditional on the caller and default contexts differing; attacker reachability for that configuration was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — SaaS identity resolution accepts only the task’s own context, and storage scope selection refuses a missing profile. Omitting the agent dimension is explicitly intentional for conversations shared by agents within a profile.
  • observed — Composio import preserves existing account state with an absent-only write before marking completion. Subagent import retains the existing newer-session compare-and-swap behavior. These controls prevent ordinary retries from blindly overwriting newer state; Composio’s scope-wide user-data ownership predates this PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Inspected tests assert byte-identical legacy files, persistent one-time completion after reopening a workspace backend, and stale-offset conflicts for conditional appends. They do not establish tenant propagation through the blocking wrapper or concurrent-import message uniqueness.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Carry the caller’s context across the blocking handoff, or bind an immutable validated conversation scope before spawning. Validate this with distinct scoped profiles and unscoped SaaS calls without weakening fail-closed behavior.
  • proposed — Define migration source ownership explicitly. Where multiple workspace sources may feed one destination scope, qualify both completion markers and process-local keys by stable source identity. Establish sink-level message idempotency for concurrent imports before relying on completion-marker conflicts as recovery.

Explanation

The PR satisfies the #7768 regression requirement. The Composio and sub-agent importers use backend markers and keep legacy files unchanged. The reported tests cover byte identity and repeat-import prevention. The PR also implements the backend-backed conversation store, one-time JSONL conversation import, fenced conditional append, and the related tests. The retained storage::rusqlite re-export has the issue-supported rationale. The two named pre-existing tests and pnpm rust:layout are reported as passing. However, #7768 also requires moving the remaining path-bound artifact/media stores onto driver ports. The PR explicitly does not claim that work, and the reviewed changes provide no implementation or test evidence for it.

The subagent session store and thread store now go through the shared
storage module instead of their own paths, and the legacy import path
was updated to match. This consolidates storage access so the stores
share one implementation rather than duplicating it.

Add tests asserting that workspaces sharing a backend each import their own
legacy file, and that the legacy import marker is keyed per source workspace.
Also cover that an unreadable legacy log surfaces as an error rather than an
empty store, so a later retry can still import.

P1 Badge Move desktop E2Es off the retired JSONL path

When the desktop Webdriver chat suite runs against its usual fresh workspace, this backend-only store no longer creates memory/conversations/threads/<hex>.jsonl, but active assertions in app/test/e2e/specs/chat-harness-send-stream.spec.ts:196-233 and app/test/e2e/specs/chat-conversation-history.spec.ts:246-271 still poll that exact path and require the new messages to appear there. Those specs will now exhaust their 10–15 second waits and fail even though persistence succeeded, so switch their introspection to the thread RPC/backend as part of this storage move.

P2 Badge Update the thread-store docs with the backend contract

This contract change leaves the maintainer documentation describing the retired implementation: crates/openhuman-core/src/threads/store/README.md:3-39 still says the live layout is unchanged JSONL files, crates/openhuman-core/src/threads/README.md:21-30 presents those files as the current records, and store/blocking.rs:20-29 says every operation folds and fsyncs them. These sections now direct contributors toward files that this adapter only reads once for migration, so update them alongside the backend switch.
