fix(marketing): never serve the Intel build to Apple Silicon Macs - #7477
Conversation
Browser arch sniffing kept handing Apple Silicon users the Intel dmg. Detection is deleted, not patched: the site now always serves arm64 to Macs, and Intel users pick their build explicitly on /download. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Thread transfer impact✅ Thread transfer remains within every enforced ceiling.
Baseline: Scenario and decoded snapshot size10 historical turns, 5 command tools per turn, 878.9 KiB retained MCP result per historical turn, and a 1.05 MiB retained result in the measured turn.

ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This PR simplifies Mac download logic by removing unreliable GPU-based architecture detection and always serving arm64 builds, with a manual fallback link for Intel users. The change is limited to marketing pages, removes complexity, and has minimal user impact. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |
…#7473, pingdotgg#7477 The add-surface menu takes upstream's data-driven action list and its keyboard shortcuts (pingdotgg#7318); the fork's per-profile Browser submenu rides on top of the Browser entry, so one click still opens the default profile. Browser arch detection kept guessing wrong and handing Apple Silicon users the Intel dmg. Every failure mode of the WebGL renderer sniff (Safari masking, WebGL off, ANGLE strings) fell back to x64, so we kept patching it (#4197, #7473). Under 0.1% of our users are on Intel Macs.
Detection is deleted, not patched:
arm64.dmgto Macs. If the asset is missing, the button links to the releases page — never a generic.dmgglob that could grab x64./downloadshows Apple Silicon as the only macOS card. Intel is a small labeled link below it, so the wrong build now takes an explicit, informed click.macArch.tsand its test are gone, with a comment inpickAssettelling future contributors not to bring detection back.Intel users who still end up wrong get caught by the existing Rosetta banner in the desktop app.
Built with Claude Fable 5 via Claude Code.
Note
Low Risk
Marketing-site download routing only; no auth or backend changes. Intel Mac users must use the labeled x64 link instead of auto-detection.
Overview
Stops browser-based Mac architecture guessing that was sending Apple Silicon users the Intel
.dmg. GPU/WebGL detection is removed entirely (macArch.tsand its tests). On the homepage, every Mac visitor now gets only the
-arm64.dmglink (no arch-specific fallback or generic.dmgmatch). A comment inpickAssetwarns against re-adding detection.On
/download, macOS is a single Apple Silicon card; Intel is a small text link below. Release URL wiring now targets anya[data-asset], so the Intel link still resolves to the x64 asset.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 756c588.
