SUMMARY

OracleEngineSpec defines no column_type_mappings, so it relies on the base mappings in BaseEngineSpec. Those have no pattern for Oracle's own type names. TableColumn.type_generic calls get_column_spec(...), which returns None for these types, so the dataset columns get no generic type:

  • NUMBER, NUMBER(p, s), BINARY_FLOAT and BINARY_DOUBLE: not numeric. NUMBER is Oracle's primary numeric type.
  • CLOB and NCLOB: not strings.

With type_generic null, a NUMBER column is not in SqlaTable.num_cols and TableColumn.is_numeric is False. In Explore, dragging it into Metrics gives no default SUM aggregate (createAdhocMetricFromColumn). Dropping a folder of columns into Metrics skips it (isColumnSupportedForMetricAggregation). Only columns whose reflected type string happens to be INTEGER or DOUBLE PRECISION were treated as numeric.

Oracle LONG is a character type but previously fell through to the base numeric mapping; it is also corrected to STRING. Existing stored dataset types pick up these mappings without a metadata re-sync. The LONG note is in the Oracle engine spec's metadata.notes, which generates the database docs page.

This PR adds Oracle column_type_mappings:

Oracle type (as reflected) SQLAlchemy type Generic type
NUMBER, NUMBER(p, s) Numeric NUMERIC
BINARY_FLOAT, BINARY_DOUBLE Float NUMERIC
CLOB, NCLOB, LONG Text STRING

The patterns end on a word boundary, so NUMBER(10, 2) matches but an unrelated name that only shares the prefix (e.g. a user-defined NUMBERING type) stays unmapped. BLOB, RAW and LONG RAW are binary and are intentionally left unmapped (LONG RAW would otherwise match the LONG pattern or the base numeric ^long pattern). Types already covered by the base mappings (INTEGER, DOUBLE PRECISION, VARCHAR, DATE, TIMESTAMP) are unchanged, and the new tests pin that.

BEFORE/AFTER SCREENSHOTS OR ANIMATED GIF

N/A. The observed behaviour, running create_app(), then Database, SqlaTable and fetch_metadata() against a live Oracle Database Free 23 container, before this change:

Oracle DDL TableColumn.type type_generic is_numeric
NUMBER NUMBER None False
NUMBER(10,2) NUMBER(10, 2) None False
NUMBER(19,0) NUMBER(19, 0) None False
BINARY_DOUBLE BINARY_DOUBLE None False
INTEGER INTEGER NUMERIC True
FLOAT DOUBLE PRECISION NUMERIC True
CLOB CLOB None False (is_string False)

The dataset's num_cols contained only the INTEGER and FLOAT columns.

TESTING INSTRUCTIONS

pytest tests/unit_tests/db_engine_specs/test_oracle.py

The new test_get_column_spec cases for NUMBER, NUMBER(p, s), BINARY_* and *CLOB fail without the change and pass with it; the suite also covers uppercase and lowercase LONG. Base-mapped types are asserted unchanged, and BLOB/RAW/LONG RAW and prefix-only names such as NUMBERING are asserted to remain unmapped.

To check manually: on an Oracle database, create a table with a NUMBER(10,2) column, add it as a dataset, and confirm the column is typed numeric. Dragging it into Metrics should now default to SUM.

…ypes

OracleEngineSpec relied on the base column type mappings, which have no
pattern for Oracle's own type names. Columns reflected as NUMBER,
NUMBER(p, s), BINARY_FLOAT or BINARY_DOUBLE therefore got no generic type,
so datasets did not treat them as numeric: no default SUM when used as a
metric, and exclusion from the dataset's numeric columns. CLOB and NCLOB
were likewise not classified as strings.

Add column_type_mappings for these types. BLOB and RAW are binary and stay
unmapped.

    • Missing test docstring · Line 156-156
BITO.md adaptive rule 12148 requires every newly added test function to carry a docstring documenting purpose and expected outcome. `test_get_column_spec` has none, unlike the documented tests in `tests/unit_tests/db_engine_specs/test_postgres.py`. Add a one-line docstring describing the mapping scenarios it pins.
    • Missing test docstring · Line 171-171
Same BITO.md rule 12148 gap as the sibling test: `test_get_column_spec_binary_types_are_unmapped` is newly added without a docstring. A one-liner noting that binary types (`BLOB`, `RAW`) are intentionally left unmapped by `OracleEngineSpec.column_type_mappings` would make the negative-case intent explicit.

The flagged issue is correct. The current regex re.compile(r"^number", re.IGNORECASE) matches any type starting with "number", which incorrectly includes user-defined types like NUMBERING as numeric. To resolve this, the regex should be updated to match only the exact NUMBER type, potentially allowing for optional precision/scale parameters.

To fix this, update the regex in superset/db_engine_specs/oracle.py to ensure it matches the full word NUMBER:

        (
            re.compile(r"^number(\(\d+(,\s*\d+)?\))?$", re.IGNORECASE),
            types.Numeric(),
            GenericDataType.NUMERIC,
        ),

I have checked the PR comments and there are no other comments to address. Would you like me to implement this fix for you?

Addressed both test-docstring suggestions in 6301433: test_get_column_spec documents the Oracle-native and base mapping expectations; test_get_column_spec_unmapped_types (renamed from test_get_column_spec_binary_types_are_unmapped) documents intentionally unmapped binary types and unrelated prefix-sharing names. The NUMBERING prefix-match finding was already fixed in 52581d1 and verified with the regression tests.

Merged origin/master in 52412cd, preserving both the column mappings and the SQL Lab cancellation implementation/tests. Validation: all applicable pre-commit hooks passed, including ruff, mypy and pylint; the Oracle unit module passed all 43 tests.

Read through this one and it holds up. The patterns sit ahead of the base mappings, the word boundaries do what the unmapped cases say, and since type_generic is derived from the stored type string, existing Oracle datasets pick this up without a re-sync. CI is green.

One optional note inline about Oracle's LONG type, which the base mappings get wrong in the other direction.

Reviewed the full diff at 1eecb6c: no new correctness, cross-engine regression, or test-coverage findings. The Oracle mappings precede the unchanged base mappings, and stored dataset types pick up the corrected classification without a metadata re-sync.

Rechecked EnxDev’s September 29 review body and inline thread: the LONG → Text/STRING request is addressed in 1eecb6c, with upper/lowercase regression cases and documentation; the thread is resolved. No outstanding asks or additional commits.

Validation: Oracle + base-engine unit tests — 158 passed (using the local superset-core/src on PYTHONPATH). All applicable pre-commit hooks passed on the three PR files, including mypy and pylint. No live Oracle integration test was run.

Acceptance at 1eecb6c

  • PASS — demonstrate user-visible impact. Ran a throwaway gvenzl/oracle-free:23-slim container (server reports Oracle Free 23.26.3), using SQLAlchemy 2.0.52 and Superset's create_app() → Database → SqlaTable.fetch_metadata(), then persisted/reloaded the dataset. Observed:

    Reflected/stored type Generic type Classification
    NUMBER, NUMBER(19, 0), NUMBER(10, 2) NUMERIC (0) is_numeric=True
    BINARY_FLOAT, BINARY_DOUBLE NUMERIC (0) is_numeric=True
FLOAT → DOUBLE PRECISION; INTEGER NUMERIC (0) is_numeric=True
CLOB, NCLOB, LONG, VARCHAR(40 CHAR) STRING (1) is_string=True
DATE, TIMESTAMP, TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE TEMPORAL (2) is_temporal=True
BLOB, RAW(16) null none of those classifications

All 16 column cases passed; Oracle SUM(ns)=10.25. With Oracle mappings disabled as a control, NUMBER/BINARY_* and CLOB/NCLOB lose their generic types, and LONG incorrectly becomes numeric. num_cols changes from FLOAT/INTEGER/LONG to the seven actual numeric columns above.

The actual reflected metadata also passed metric-default and rendered folder-drop dispatcher checks: numeric → SUM; string/temporal → COUNT_DISTINCT; binary/untyped → skipped. 57 Jest tests passed, including 34 live-metadata acceptance cases (jsdom, not browser pointer-drag E2E).

  • PASS — upstream mappings and regression coverage. Oracle unit suite: 45 passed. All applicable pre-commit hooks passed on the three branch-changed files, including mypy. No fix or push needed. Conditional downstream 6.1 carry remains a separate, unconfirmed release requirement.

  • PASS — conditional disposition. Impact was reproduced, so the “no impact / expected behavior” closure path does not apply.

The `^long\b` pattern also matches `LONG RAW` (confirmed: `re.match(r'^long\b', 'LONG RAW')` is True). `LONG RAW` is a legacy binary type, not character data, so mapping it to `types.Text()`/STRING is incorrect. Consider excluding it (e.g. `^long(?!\s+raw)\b`) or leaving binary types unmapped like BLOB/RAW.

The note was added to the frozen 6.1.0 docs snapshot, which describes a
release that does not include this change. Current database pages are
generated from engine spec metadata, so the note belongs in notes.

4bfeedd moves the LONG column note out of the frozen 6.1.0 docs snapshot, which describes a release without this change, and into OracleEngineSpec.metadata["notes"]. The current database page is generated from that metadata. No behavior change; test_oracle.py passes (45).

Re Bito run #dd01c7 ("LONG RAW misclassified as text"): fixed in 63f4fca. LONG RAW is binary, and dropping it from the LONG pattern alone would let the base numeric ^long pattern take it. So OracleEngineSpec.get_column_types now returns no mapping for LONG RAW, the same as BLOB and RAW. test_get_column_spec_unmapped_types covers upper- and lowercase LONG RAW; both cases fail without the fix. test_oracle.py: 47 passed.
