SUMMARY

An assistant answering questions about a filtered dashboard could report numbers that ignore that dashboard's filters. For example, with a single-client filter applied, it could return totals across all clients. There were three gaps:

  1. Only the chart tools received dashboard filters. query_dataset, get_table and execute_sql, which open-ended questions usually go through, had no notion of dashboard scope.
  2. The filters travelled as a tool argument, so the model could drop them by passing its own extra_form_data, even {}.
  3. A retried call after a tool error carried no scope.

Design

  • Transport. The client sends the dashboard's active filters in an X-Superset-Dashboard-Scope request header (base64url(zlib(JSON)): {version, dashboard_id, chart_filters: {chart_id: extra_form_data}}) on every MCP request of the turn. The model never sees the header, so it cannot remove it, and retries carry it again. Without the header nothing changes. A malformed header refuses every call rather than being ignored.
  • One chokepoint. mcp_auth_hook applies the scope to every protected tool call after RBAC and dataset routing, and before the tool runs (apply_call_dashboard_scope). check_tool_permission is not the right place: it is a boolean RBAC probe that also backs tools/list visibility and never sees call arguments. The tool-search call_tool proxy forwards through ctx.fastmcp.call_tool, which reaches the same wrapper.
  • Request rewriting, AND-composed. The tool's request is rewritten before it builds a query, so every internal path, and every cache key derived from the request, sees the scoped request:
    • get_chart_data, get_chart_preview (data formats), get_dashboard_data: each chart's dashboard filters are AND-ed with the model's extra_form_data. Filter lists are concatenated. Row-constraining overrides the dashboard sets cannot be changed: time windows (including time-series cross-filters, which arrive as TEMPORAL_RANGE clauses without a time_range), time columns and relative anchors. Refused cases:
      • charts not on the scoped dashboard;
      • identifiers that don't resolve to an accessible chart (get_chart_preview would otherwise read them as a form_data_key);
      • any unsaved form_data_key state.
    • get_chart_info, get_chart_sql: composed the same way when the chart is on the dashboard, otherwise unchanged (they return no rows).
    • query_dataset, get_table (datasets): the dashboard-wide filters are AND-ed into the query filters, and the model's time range is intersected with the dashboard's.
    • execute_sql: every table the SQL reads is replaced with a filtered sub-query, using the same AST rewrite RLS uses, so the filter applies at the read, not the output. Predicates are built with the dataset's own column quoting, value coercion (filter_values_handler), NULL-aware IN lists and get_time_filter, then rendered with dialect literal binds, as RLS predicates are. SQL that could read tables the parser cannot see is refused: opaque statements, functions sqlglot does not model (query_to_xml, dblink, UDFs), table functions and dynamically named tables. Two new SQLStatement helpers support this: get_unmodelled_functions and has_dynamic_table_source. Engines that only support predicate-form RLS are refused, because that form misses parenthesised reads.
    • Chart authoring tools refuse only data previews (ascii/table/vega_lite).
    • Writes that change what charts or datasets query are refused while the scope is active: adding a chart to a dashboard, saving a chart, update_dashboard, defining a virtual dataset, editing a dataset or metric, and restoring a chart or dataset. Otherwise a chart added or re-pointed mid-conversation, or a model-defined dataset such as SELECT 'A' AS client, ..., could satisfy the filters without honoring them.
    • Tools that return no dataset rows pass through. Any other tool, including extension tools, is refused (default deny). A test asserts every registered tool is classified.
  • Refuse, never widen. When the scope cannot be applied, the call fails with a tool error starting Dashboard filter scope refused this call:, stating that no query was run and what to do instead. Cases include: a column the dataset lacks; a column the dashboard filters differently for different charts; SQL reading an unregistered table, or a table without the filtered column (for example a dimension-table join or a UNION branch); templated SQL; semantic views; a clause Superset's granularity handling would drop.
  • Caches. Superset's chart-data and SQL result caches key on the rewritten query or SQL, so an unscoped entry cannot be hit. FastMCP's response cache keys only on tool name and arguments, so it is bypassed for calls carrying the header.
  • Not a security boundary. RBAC, dataset permissions and RLS run exactly as before and are neither relaxed nor relied on. execute_sql runs the normal access check before describing any table in a refusal.

No config flag: the header is the opt-in, and coverage is complete by construction (rewrite, refuse, or pass a tool that reads no rows).

TESTING INSTRUCTIONS

pytest tests/unit_tests/mcp_service/test_dashboard_scope.py \
       tests/unit_tests/mcp_service/test_dashboard_scope_sql.py
  • Model-supplied extra_form_data (None, {}, {"filters": []}) keeps the scope. Overrides that would loosen it are refused. Tested at the unit level and end to end through the MCP client.
  • Each covered tool receives the scope: chart tools, get_dashboard_data, query_dataset (end to end, the query dict handed to QueryContextFactory), get_table, execute_sql (end to end, the SQL handed to Database.execute).
  • Cache: a real ResponseCachingMiddleware serves unscoped calls from cache but never serves or stores scoped ones. Scoped and unscoped query objects have different cache keys.
  • Unmappable paths refuse. The SQL tests run the rewritten SQL against a real SQLite database and check the numbers: aggregates over filtered rows only, CTEs, subqueries, UNION branches, a hostile OR 1=1, an injection-style value, NULL-aware IN, and a time range. Refusal tests cover:
    • joins to tables without the filtered column;
    • unregistered tables;
    • opaque statements and table-reading functions;
    • predicate-form engines;
    • templated SQL.
  • An adversarial review found seven routes around an earlier revision of this PR; each has a regression test:
    • a form_data_key passed as the identifier;
    • identifier combined with form_data_key;
    • query_to_xml-style functions;
    • moving a time-series cross-filter's window;
    • shifting relative anchors;
    • predicate-form engines;
    • chart and dataset writes made mid-turn.
  • Full tests/unit_tests/mcp_service suite passes locally.

Manual check: run the MCP server over streamable HTTP and call query_dataset with and without the header, e.g. python -c "import base64,zlib,json;print(base64.urlsafe_b64encode(zlib.compress(json.dumps({'version':1,'dashboard_id':<id>,'chart_filters':{'<chart_id>':{'filters':[{'col':'<col>','op':'IN','val':['<v>']}]}}}).encode())).decode())".

…ol calls

An assistant answering questions about a filtered dashboard could return
numbers that ignore the dashboard's filters: only the chart tools received
the filters, the model could shed them by supplying its own extra_form_data
(even {}), and query_dataset, get_table and execute_sql had no notion of a
dashboard scope at all.

A client now sends the dashboard's active filters in the
X-Superset-Dashboard-Scope header on every MCP request of the turn. The
model never sees the header, so it cannot remove the scope, and retried
calls carry it again. mcp_auth_hook applies it to every protected tool call
before the tool runs:

- chart tools and get_dashboard_data AND each chart's dashboard filters with
  the model's extra_form_data; row-constraining overrides cannot be changed
- query_dataset and get_table AND the dashboard-wide filters into the query
  and intersect the time range
- execute_sql constrains every table read with predicates built from the
  dataset's own column and value handling, injected through the RLS AST
  rewrite, and refuses SQL whose tables are not registered datasets with
  the filtered columns
- chart authoring data previews are refused; tools returning no dataset rows
  are unaffected; any other tool, including extension tools, is refused

Where the scope cannot be applied the call fails with an explicit tool error
instead of widening. The request is rewritten before any query is built, so
chart-data and SQL cache keys include the scope, and MCP response caching is
bypassed for scoped calls. Row-level security and permissions are untouched.
@github-actions github-actions Bot added the doc Namespace | Anything related to documentation label Sep 29, 2026
A statement sqlglot can only parse as an opaque command (a stored-procedure
CALL, EXECUTE IMMEDIATE, SHOW without a target) reports no table reads, so
the scope rewrite treated it as having nothing to filter. Refuse any script
with such a statement, using the parser's existing fail-closed signal.
A non-string adhoc filter clause raised AttributeError instead of a scope
refusal, and charts that share a time range on different time columns were
reported as having different time ranges.

Found by an adversarial review of the scope enforcement:

- Chart data tools refused any request whose identifier does not resolve to
  a chart. get_chart_preview reads an unresolvable identifier as a
  form_data_key, so passing a cached key as the identifier previously skipped
  the scope entirely. Unsaved Explore state (form_data_key) is also refused
  for data, since it can query any dataset regardless of the chart it came
  from.
- A time-series cross-filter sets its window as a TEMPORAL_RANGE clause with
  no time_range. The model can no longer replace that window with its own
  time_range, shift it with relative_start/relative_end, or add
  TEMPORAL_RANGE clauses, including on adhoc columns that alias a filtered
  column.
- execute_sql refuses SQL calling functions the parser does not model
  (query_to_xml, dblink, EXTERNAL_QUERY, UDFs) and table functions or
  dynamically named tables, which can read tables named in strings. Engines
  that apply RLS as a predicate are refused, because that form misses
  parenthesised table reads. Rewrite errors refuse instead of propagating.
- Writes that change what charts or datasets query (adding a chart to a
  dashboard, saving a chart, defining or editing a dataset or metric,
  restoring a chart or dataset) are refused while a scope is active. A
  model-defined virtual dataset such as SELECT 'A' AS client ... would
  otherwise satisfy the dashboard filter without honoring it.

The parser checks live in SQLStatement (get_unmodelled_functions,
has_dynamic_table_source) so SQL parsing stays in superset.sql.
Refusing every function the SQL parser does not model also refused common
builtins such as MySQL NOW(), Postgres AGE() and ClickHouse toYYYYMM(),
so ordinary date-window queries could not run under a dashboard scope.
Allow a short list of builtin scalar functions that cannot read tables.
Only unqualified calls match: get_unmodelled_functions now reports a
qualified call with its qualifier, so a schema function named like a
builtin is still refused.

A falsy non-list such as "filters": false passed validation as an empty
list, and a non-string time_range reached the time-range utilities. Check
both by type so a malformed scope header is refused explicitly.
get_catalog, added on master, lists asset metadata (id, uuid, name,
description, url) and returns no dataset rows, so it runs unchanged while
a dashboard scope is active, like the list tools it mirrors.

This is a lot to absorb in one pass, most of the later commits close gaps an adversarial review found in the first version.

Design seems solid: header the model never sees, refuse rather than widen. It's billed as correctness-only, not an authorization boundary, but the SQL rewrite in dashboard_scope_sql.py overlaps enough with RLS's own job that I'd want a second pair of eyes on that file before this merges.

Refusal guidance no longer suggests clearing, changing or working around
dashboard filters; it states what is restricted and that the request must
stay within the active filters. A unit test checks every refusal message.

On the bito review of 83527e2:

  • "Chart overrides overwritten" (dashboard_scope.py ~596): not applied. On a dashboard, the frontend builds chart form data as {...chart.form_data, ...extraData} (getFormDataWithExtraFilters.ts). So when native filters apply, the dashboard's aggregated extra_form_data replaces any extra_form_data saved on the chart. _chart_time_column only runs when the dashboard applies a time range, so the replacement makes it resolve the same temporal target the dashboard renders. Merging in the chart's saved extra_form_data would resolve a column the dashboard doesn't use. Saved chart filters (adhoc_filters, granularity_sqla, etc.) live in form data, not extra_form_data, so they are still read and still AND with the dashboard scope.
  • Additional suggestions: the 4 test docstring items are style-only and skipped. Falsy granularity_sqla/time_column: this matches Superset's own bool(form_data.get("granularity_sqla")) handling, and with no column left the call is still refused. Empty dataset_ids: no caller can pass it (both pass a non-empty set), and if one did, the call would be refused rather than widened. No change for any of these.

Separately, f8e1aff rewords the scope refusal guidance. Refusals no longer suggest clearing, changing or working around dashboard filters. They say what is restricted and that the request must stay within the active dashboard filters. A unit test checks every refusal message in dashboard_scope.py and dashboard_scope_sql.py for clear/remove/disable/bypass wording.

    • Ungrammatical error message · Line 996-996
      Adjacent to the edited guidance on lines 997-998, the reason string reads "has no column ... that the dashboard filters, so the filter cannot be applied" - the verb after "filters" is missing, so the sentence is ungrammatical. This error reaches the model/caller verbatim via `MCPDashboardScopeError`. Fix the wording while this message is being touched.
  • tests/unit_tests/mcp_service/test_dashboard_scope.py - 4
    • Constants scan misses AnnAssign · Line 1336-1344
      The `constants` map only collects `ast.Assign` nodes, so an annotated module constant (`REFUSAL: str = "...")` would be silently skipped and any refusal text referencing it is dropped from the scan, weakening this guard without failing. No annotated constants exist today (verified by grep), but the helper's docstring claims 'every' refusal. Handle `ast.AnnAssign` too.
    • Inline imports violate rule 12745 · Line 1333-1365
      `_refusal_texts` imports `ast` inline (1333) and the test imports `dashboard_scope`/`dashboard_scope_sql` inline (1365). BITO rule 12745 requires module-level imports unless a documented circular dependency exists; `ast` is stdlib and this file already imports `superset.mcp_service` at top level, so no cycle justifies either. Hoist both to the import block.
    • Untyped locals in new test code · Line 1336-1377
      New locals `constants`, `texts`, `parts` in `_refusal_texts` and `texts`, `offending` in the test lack explicit annotations. BITO rule 13153 requires typed locals in test files even when inferable. Annotate e.g. `texts: list[str] = []` and `offending: list[str]`.
    • Magic threshold 20 in guard · Line 1371-1371
      `assert len(texts) > 20` hardcodes a threshold whose meaning is undocumented (it is a smoke floor over the refusal texts of both scanned modules; 64 exist today, verified by running the helper's logic). If the AST scan silently degrades and returns 21 texts, the guard still passes. Name the constant and tie it to the two scanned modules.

Nice work Amin, this is a lot of machinery and it holds up. I went after the enforcement claim rather than the diff: the dashboard filters land in the SQL instead of being applied after it, every read shape I could build gets filtered, and the context shapes that should fail closed do.

What I ran on f8e1aff: the two new suites plus parse_tests (1455 passed) and the full tests/unit_tests/mcp_service suite (5910 passed, 3 skipped); the 12 new parse_tests cases copied onto the merge base 16271bb, where all 12 fail and the 1204 pre-existing ones still pass; a differential over real streamable HTTP through uvicorn across seven header shapes (absent, valid, malformed, truncated zlib, unsupported version, empty chart_filters, lowercased header name) times five tools, where a malformed or truncated header refuses even the neutral tools and an absent or empty one is indistinguishable from the no-header path; and 24 adversarial SQL shapes rewritten and executed against a real SQLite warehouse with row counts compared, including self joins, correlated and scalar subqueries, a CTE read twice, UNION / INTERSECT, window functions, GROUP BY ... HAVING, quoted and case-folded table names, a CTE shadowing a dataset name, and a trailing line comment (sqlglot turns -- into a block comment, so it cannot swallow the injected WHERE). I also checked that the rewrite leaves each statement's table set unchanged, so execute_sql's own raise_for_access still matches the same datasets, and that all 78 registered tools are classified with nothing stale in either map.

Two notes and a nit inline, none of them blocking, so approving rather than holding this up. @rusackas, most of my time went into dashboard_scope_sql.py if that helps with your second-pair-of-eyes ask.

CI: everything green except Analyze (javascript) and Analyze (python), which both end in CodeQL job status was configuration error with no alerts attributed to this diff, so unrelated to the change.

This block worries me a bit. It reads granularity_sqla and time_column out of form_data after merge_extra_form_data has run, but EXTRA_FORM_DATA_OVERRIDE_REGULAR_MAPPINGS in superset/constants.py maps granularity_sqla to granularity, so the dashboard's override lands in form_data["granularity"] while the chart's saved granularity_sqla is left exactly as it was. Two entries go into columns and the call is refused.

I ran dashboard_constraints(scope, dataset_ids={3}) on this branch with the chart's extra_form_data set to {"time_range": "Last week", "granularity_sqla": "other_ts"}:

  • saved {"granularity_sqla": "ds"}, with or without a saved time_range: refused, chart 11 has no single time-filter column for the dashboard time range
  • saved {"time_column": "ds"}: refused, same message
  • saved TEMPORAL_RANGE adhoc filter on ds plus saved granularity_sqla: "ds": refused, same message
  • saved TEMPORAL_RANGE adhoc filter on ds only: resolves other_ts, which is right

In all four the chart's own merged form data is unambiguous: granularity is other_ts and the only TEMPORAL_RANGE subject is other_ts. So the first three are false refusals, and they take out query_dataset, get_table and execute_sql together, since all three resolve the column through this function. The trigger is a Time column native filter, which is what writes granularity_sqla into extra_form_data (superset-frontend/src/filters/components/TimeColumn/TimeColumnFilterPlugin.tsx:57), on a dashboard where at least one affected chart still carries the legacy key.

It fails closed, so nothing widens and I am not calling it blocking. The fix looks small: either skip the legacy keys when the chart's extra_form_data overrode them, or read form_data.get("granularity") alongside them. One more case in test_chart_temporal_resolution_honors_overrides_without_mutation with a legacy saved target plus a granularity_sqla override would pin it. The existing cases cover override-with-adhoc and legacy-without-override, so neither one crosses into this combination.

Fixed in 76cad0e. The legacy target now follows the query object: granularity (where the merge puts a granularity_sqla override) is read before the saved granularity_sqla, and that override also supersedes a saved time_column unless the dashboard sets time_column too. Your four cases are in test_time_column_override_supersedes_saved_legacy_target, and all four resolve other_ts. The first three failed before the fix. Targets that really disagree still refuse: a time_column override that differs from the saved target, or two saved legacy targets with no override. Those are covered by test_legacy_time_targets_that_disagree_are_refused.

Just a small NIT: this keys off header presence while apply_call_dashboard_scope keys off scope.has_constraints, so a turn on a dashboard with no active filters still sends the header and loses response caching on every call even though the scope is a no-op. No impact on the OSS default (MCP_CACHE_CONFIG["enabled"] is False), so only worth changing if you think decoding the header here is cheaper than the lost hits.

Done in 76cad0e. The bypass now decodes the scope and skips the cache only when scope.has_constraints, which matches apply_call_dashboard_scope, so a dashboard with no active filters keeps response caching. An undecodable or repeated header still bypasses the cache, and the tool call refuses it. test_response_cache_is_kept_for_a_scope_without_constraints and test_response_cache_is_bypassed_for_a_malformed_scope cover both. The now-unused has_dashboard_scope_header is removed.

…opes

A Time column native filter overrides granularity_sqla, which the merge
writes to granularity. The scoped time column now reads granularity before
the saved granularity_sqla, as the query object does, and the override
supersedes a saved time_column unless the dashboard also sets one, so
those charts are no longer refused. Disagreeing targets still refuse.

The response cache bypass keys on the decoded scope: a scope without
active filters keeps caching, while a constrained or undecodable header
still bypasses it. A test pins that a chart on the queried dataset
without a clause never removes that clause from the dataset query.
…cope

The scope rewrite rebuilt the call from bound.args, which moved keyword
arguments such as ctx into positional slots. With tools invoked through
the worker wrapper, which passes every argument by keyword, the auth
wrapper then injected ctx a second time. Replace the request where the
caller passed it, and let the SQL scope tests share their session with
the tool worker thread.
