Checked the provider split here. Linux/ALSA now gets hw:N, while the other providers keep their existing :N form, and ?? preserves an explicit device 0. The platform/device matrix covers the actual argument boundary well. Looks clean to me.
## Summary The speech-to-text and text-to-speech examples log rejected API requests or audio-tool failures, but `main().catch(console.error)` leaves the process exit status at zero. Shell scripts and smoke checks therefore report success even when recording, transcription, synthesis, or playback failed. Wrap each entrypoint in the existing async `run()` pattern and set `process.exitCode = 1` after logging the error. Successful runs still exit zero, and output can flush normally without forcing `process.exit()`. ## Regression coverage Add six process-level cases covering HTTP rejection, external audio-tool failure, and success for both examples. They run the actual TypeScript entrypoints and public SDK against a loopback HTTP server, with synthetic `ffmpeg`/`ffplay` executables instead of hardware or live API calls. Assertions verify the exit status, preserved diagnostics, request/recording/playback boundaries, synthetic audio bytes, and cleanup. The fixture does not depend on recording-device arguments and is compatible with the separate ALSA fix in openai#2564. Before the fix, the four failure cases fail because the examples exit zero; both success controls pass. After the fix, all six pass. Unix-only executable fixtures are explicitly skipped on native Windows. ## Verification - Focused audio suites: 47 tests passed. - Full canonical `./scripts/test`: 7,015 handwritten tests, 556 generated tests, and 12 snapshots passed (existing generated skips unchanged). - `pnpm exec tsc --noEmit`, canonical `./scripts/lint`, and `./scripts/build` passed. - Direct before/after CLI reproductions on the exact Node 22.0.0 floor confirm API and recording failures change from exit zero to one while preserving diagnostics. - [Branch CI](https://github.com/openai/openai-node/actions/runs/33601168381) passed on Node 22, 24, and 26, including all 14 ecosystem integrations, packed-package checks on supported LTS lines, and performance benchmarks. - Adversarial self-review and independent closing review found no remaining security, compatibility, edge-case, or regression-test blockers. Only handwritten examples and a new regression test change. No SDK API, generated code, dependency, or lockfile changes.

Summary
recordAudio()selects FFmpeg's ALSA input format on Linux but passes device names such as:0and:3. That is AVFoundation's audio-only syntax; ALSA uses card identifiers such ashw:0andhw:3(FFmpeg ALSA documentation).Use the
hw:prefix only when the selected provider isalsa, and clarify the Linux card-number meaning in the option's JSDoc. The default and explicit0are preserved with??. Other providers, argument order, WAV output, sample rate, channel count, timeout/cancellation handling, and playback are unchanged.Regression coverage
Add a nine-case public-helper matrix covering Linux, macOS, and Windows argument selection with an omitted device, explicit
0, and explicit3. It checks the complete spawn argument vector and returned file metadata/content. Update the existing host-dependent recording assertions without removing their lifecycle coverage. The test-only commit reproduced five Linux failures and 42 passing controls locally before the production change. Afterward, all 47 audio tests pass.
Native verification
A separate Linux proof used FFmpeg 6.1.1 and an isolated ALSA configuration containing only a null PCM source, which generates zero samples without microphone access.
0and3; native FFmpeg rejected:0/:3while accepting the correspondinghw:control inputs.0/3.audio.wav, with one channel at 24 kHz.This validates argument syntax and helper integration, not physical microphone compatibility.
Validation and scope
CI on
607c9233passes 7,018 handwritten tests, 556 generated tests, and 12 generated snapshots on each of Node 22, 24, and 26. Existing skips are unchanged. All 14 non-live ecosystem fixtures, canonical lint, build, published-source TypeScript 4.9/6 checks, package validation, and benchmarks pass. Packed CJS/ESM/browser/source-map checks pass on the Node 22/24 CI lines.Adversarial self-review and an independent closing review found no remaining candidate issues.
One production expression, one JSDoc clarification, and focused tests. All three paths are handwritten and absent from the verified public generated reference
65094c1637432c123c310d03e0cda1e7e6f1c997. No generated code, public types, dependencies, provider mappings, workflows, or custom-code budgets change. This is separate from #2548's playback-input detection fix.
